ELON, North CarolinaMateo Cardona notched his first goal of the season for UNCW, but the Seahawks were unable to rally from a three-goal deficit on Saturday in a 3-1 loss at Elon.

The Phoenix, who join the Colonial Athletic Association beginning in the fall of 2014, improved to 4-0-1 with the non-conference home win. UNCW, meanwhile, dropped to 3-2 and 2-1 in road games.

Elon also now holds a 3-2-1 advantage in the all-time series.

Elon built a 2-0 lead at the intermission on goals from Jason Waterman and Daniel Lovitz in the 30th and 34th minutes, respectively.

Waterman would strike again, with his second goal of the season, to make it 3-0 in the 48th minute.

Waterman and Lovitz would both add assists on the evening for Elon.

Cardona’s goal came off a helper from Jose Garcia in the 78th minute.

Elon’s Nathan Dean finished with six saves while the Phoenix held a narrow 12-11 advantage in shots.

The Seahawks visit UNC Greensboro on Sept. 21 at 7 p.m. when they return to action.
