WILMINGTON, North Carolina - UNCW hosts the ninth edition of the Hilton Garden Inn Classic this weekend at the UNCW Soccer Stadium. The Seahawks, who open with Presbyterian on Friday, have won five of the eight classics since the event’s inception.

The Seahawks enter the tournament on a confident two-win streak. “Ohio State and Cincinnati are two good teams and defeating them on the road was a real confidence booster,” said UNCW Head Coach Aidan Heaney, who is in his thirteenth year with the Men’s Soccer program. “The guys are ready for the home opener and to perform well and show people in town that we’ve got a good team. Our guys are ready to get up and get after ‘em.”

UNCW’s Colin Bonner, the reigning CAA Player of the Week, scored twice in the season opening win over Ohio State, including the game-winner in the second overtime

The Mercer Bears, who were 11-7-2 in 2012, are looking for their first win of the season, having dropped their opener to Clemson 2-0. Mercer was picked to finish third in the Atlantic Sun Conference.

Elon’s season began with a tie against Northeastern and a win over Rutgers last weekend. Elon’s record last season was 15-5-2 and they qualified the NCAA tournament in 2012.

Presbyterian, who finished 4-16 last season, played a tough game in their season opener, edging out USC Upstate for a 4-3 OT win.

Coach Heaney added “If you come, you’re going to see the guy’s intensity and you’re going to see them compete. If they bring those things we’re  going to have a good weekend, and that’s what I expect to happen.”
