RALEIGH, North CarolinaMateo Cardona’s goal in the 83rd minute gave UNCW a 1-all draw against NC State in an exhibition match on Saturday at the Dail Soccer Stadium.

For Cardona it was his second goal of the exhibition season as the Seahawks closed out the two-game preseason slate with a 1-0-1 mark.

“Our kids played well,” said UNCW Head Coach Aidan Heaney. “NC State is a tough opponent, a quality side, and we competed with them tonight. We made progress in many areas and that’s what we’re looking for in the preseason.”

NCSU opened the scoring in the 38th minute when Clement Simonin was on the finishing end of a cross from Gbenga Makinde following a short corner kick played by Alex Martinez.

Cardona drew the Seahawks even when he beat NCSU keeper Jonathan Davis with a free kick following a Wolfpack foul just outside the penalty area.

The Seahawks held off the Wolfpack late in the contest when Martinez rang the post in the 86th minute and had a chance to take the lead late, but Jamie Dell was unable to capitalize with 90 seconds remaining for UNCW.

“I thought we showed a lot of character coming back from a goal down. We kept our heads up and played to the final whistle.”

UNCW opens the regular season on Aug. 30 at Ohio State in the Wolstein Classic. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m. at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium.

Notes: The Seahawks played 18 players for the second straight outing … The Wolfpack managed just one shot on goal on the evening as Sean Melvin played the first half and Sam Williams the second for the Seahawks … NCSU posted a 12-9 advantage in shots.
