Video interview with Coach Matt Williams

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – Veteran Head Coach Mark Scalf has announced the hiring of Matt Williams as pitching coach for UNCW’s highly successful program.

Williams previously served as pitching coach at junior college power Spartanburg Methodist for eight seasons.

“We’re extremely excited to have Matt join the program,” said Scalf. “He has a proven reputation as an outstanding recruiter, as well as the ability to work with and develop a pitching staff. We’re looking forward to his contributions to our staff and program. I think he’ll have an immediate impact with our pitching staff.”

Williams helped the Pioneers achieve the top ranking in the nation in 2013 and a berth in the NJCAA World Series in Grand Junction, Colo. SMC reached the World Series three times  (2007, 2009, 2012, 2013) with Williams as the pitching coach.

“This is a great opportunity to work in a successful program with Coach Scalf, (Randy) Hood and (Robbie) Monday,” said Williams. “I’d like everyone at UNCW for this opportunity and SMC Head Coach Tim Wallace, helped me develop as a recruiter and pitching coach. I’d also like to thank my father, Steve Williams (current head coach at USC Lancaster), for all his support and guidance from day one. I’m looking forward to getting started in the fall.”

In 2013, SMC posted a 48-15 record with a 3.36 earned run average, which ranked in the top-35 nationally. Opponents hit just .252 against the Pioneer pitching staff.

A tireless recruiter, Williams sent 34 players to the NCAA Division I ranks and 15 of that group entered professional baseball.

Williams played for the Pioneers in 2002 and 2003 and was part of a sophomore class that combined to win 101 wins over two seasons. In 2003, he tossed a no-hitter in the Region X tournament against Surry Community College.

From SMC, Williams entered professional baseball and pitched for the Mid-Missouri Mavericks of the Frontier League before transitioning to coaching. He began his coaching career as pitching coach for Spartanburg Post 28 American Legion and helped the program to a pair of state titles. In 2010, he served as head coach of the Laconia Muskrats and guided the rookie franchise to a spot in the New England College Baseball League playoffs.

Tim Wallace, Director Of Athletics/Head Baseball Coach, Spartanburg Methodist

“Matt Williams has been an integral part of the SMC program, both as a player and coach and will be difficult to replace. After reaching the World Series as a player for us, his work as Recruiting Coordinator/Pitching Coach helped us return four more times. He has a tremendous, and well-deserved, reputation as a pitching coach and works tirelessly at recruiting. I am sure that he will prove to be a great addition to Mark Scalf’s staff at UNCW. Quality leaders attract quality people.”

Chad Holbrook, Head Coach, South Carolina

“Matt Williams is one of the brightest and hardest working coaches in our game. He's had an incredible amount of success in just a short period of time. He will have a long and very successful stint with Coach Scalf at UNCW.”
