WILMINGTON, North Carolina – UNCW head men’s soccer coach Aidan Heaney has announced the addition of Sean Melvin to the Seahawk roster for the 2013-14 season.

The 6-4 Melvin comes to the Seahawk program as an outstanding goal keeper from Vancouver, British Columbia, where he was the starting goalie for the Vancouver Whitecaps U18 Academy team in 2012-13. He trained with former UNCW standout and longtime Major League Soccer keeper Brad Knighton.

“I’m delighted that Sean will be joining the UNCW program,” said Heaney. “He comes to us after gaining valuable experience with Vancouver’s highly regarded U18 Academy and PDL teams. Sean plays with a presence and is a goalkeeper who will continue to improve. Sean gives us additional depth in goal with the return of Sam Williams and Brandon Bolen.”

Melvin helped the Whitecaps Academy squad compile a 23-8-4 record , capture the Northwest Division title and place fifth in the 2013 U.S. Soccer Development Academy Finals.

In an article by Darrell Lovell of MLSsoccer.com, Melvin was listed as a top-five prospect following his performance at the USSSDA finals.

Melvin also played in the Whitecaps U23 Professional Development League (PDL) for the last two summers. He trained with the Whitecaps’ first team during the 2013 preseason before returning to the U18 squad.

In addition, Melvin is a member of the U20 Canadian National Team Pool.
