CAA Pitcher of the Week Nominee: Kelly Secrest, LHP, Junior, Mt. Airy, N.C./North Davidson
- Secrest picked up two saves over the weekend with stellar work out of the bullpen. In four innings of relief, he allowed just one base runner, on a hit, and struck out six. On Sunday, he retired nine of the 10 batters he faced. In 10 conference appearances this season, all in relief, he has five saves and 19 strikeouts in 14.1 innings.
CAA Rookie of the Week Nominee: Terence Connelly, INF, Fresh., Garden City, N.Y./Chaminade
-Led Seahawks to a series win with a .556 batting average going 5-for-9. In the field he fielded all 10 chances cleanly and started a pair of double plays. He extended his current on base streak to 18 games, he also pieced together a 17-game streak earlier this season. He leads the Seahawks with s freshman school record 13 hit by pitches and tied for the club lead with 27 walks.
Back To The CAA Tournament: With their win in the series finale against Northeastern, UNCW clinched a spot in the CAA tournament for the 28th consecutive season. UNCW is the only program in the history of the conference to compete in all 28 editions of the championship tournament. Teams have had to qualify for the CAA tournament every season since 2001. Prior to that every school participated in the double-elimination tournament.
Remaining Schedule: The Seahawks have eight games left on the docket, including three games, all within the CAA, at home (William & Mary) … The five road games include non-conference tilts at NC State and Coastal Carolina and a three-game series at Hofstra to end the regular season. UNCW (15-5, .750) holds a 1.5 game lead over William & Mary (14-7, .667) and a 3.5 game lead over third-place Delaware (12-9, .571) in the CAA pennant race.
Record Watch: Hunter Ridge, who became UNCW’s all-time hits leader in March, is poised to take the lead in RBI’s. He enters the week second all-time with 181 RBI. Jonathan Batts (2004-07) holds the school career record with 182 while former standout Matt Wright (2000-03) is now third with 180 … Michael Bass is now fifth with 70 stolen bases … Bass (.404) is also bidding to become just the fourth Seahawk to hit .400 in a season … Kelly Secrest holds UNCW’s saves record by a lefthander with seven and is tied for 5th on the single season list … At 8-2, Mat Batts is second to Bryan Mazur (10-4, 1999) in wins by a southpaw in a season.
Streaks: Michael Bass had his on-base streak halted at 42 after failing to reach base against Northeastern’s Nick Berger in a 1-0 loss on Saturday … Luke Dunlap and Ryan LaGrange had their career-long hitting streaks halted at 16 and 15 games, respectively … Luis Renvill owns UNCW’s longest current streak at three games … Terence Connelly and Ryan LaGrange have reached base safely in 18 and 17 games, respectively, both career highs while Matt Keeler is also at a career-long 10 games … Mat Batts has fanned at least seven batters in each of his last seven starts, over that span he has 58 punchouts and just seven walks.
Mound Report: The Seahawks posted a 4.00 ERA on the week while Northeastern hit .286 against the staff … UNCW allowed just three free passes while striking out 25 Huskies. UNCW did allow nine doubles and a home run to NU, who entered the weekend with the lowest batting average in the conference (.265).
After Further Research: UNCW skipper Mark Scalf is the all-time winningest coach in conference play with a 295-191-1 mark.
Notes: The Seahawks remained in first in the CAA after winning their fifth conference series of the season … UNCW is 9-1-2 in weekend series on the season … UNCW stranded a season-high 15 runners on base in a 7-6 win over Northeastern on Friday while also drawing a season-high 12 walks.
