NEWARK, Delaware – Senior Maria Newman recorded a RBI single in the bottom of the 11th to break a 1-all tie and lift Delaware to a 2-1 victory over UNCW in Colonial Athletic Association softball action Saturday at the Delaware Softball Stadium.
The Blue Hens improved to 35-20 overall and 12-9 in league play as finished the regular season in fourth place in the league standings. Delaware will be the No. 3 seed in the 2013 CAA Softball Championship, scheduled for May 7-9 at Hofstra Softball Stadium. The Seahawks finished their first season under Head Coach Kristy Norton with a 16-37 overall record and 3-17 league mark.
UNCW opened the scoring in the top of the second on a squeeze play by senior Olivia Poplin that scored junior KC Shue, who opened the inning with a triple to right field.
The Blue Hens would draw even in the sixth at 1-all as senior Lara Andrews recorded a one-out triple to right that plated sophomore Jessica Grisler after she reached on a single one batter earlier.
The game would remain tied until the bottom of the 11th, when senior Gina Knutson opened the frame with a double to left field before the Seahawks were able to retire the next two batters to set the stage for Newman, who singled to left field to plate Knutson for the winning run.
Grisler went 2-for-4 while Andrews and Newman had one hit and drove in one run piece for the Blue Hens. Senior Amanda Stacevicz picked up the win for Delaware as she moved her record to 7-4. In five innings in relief, Stacevicz did not allow a run as she scattered four hits.
Shue, senior Lauryn Buckworth and junior Morgan McCann tallied two hits apiece for the Seahawks while Poplin was credited with UNCW’s lone RBI. Freshman Kayla Pine was the tough-luck loser for the Seahawks, allowing two runs on eight hits and two walks in 10.2 innings in the circle to move her season mark to 1-7.
