WILMINGTON, North Carolina – The UNCW softball team was swept by visiting Drexel, 4-1 and 6-2, in a Colonial Athletic Association doubleheader Saturday at Boseman Field.

The Dragons improved to 15-32 overall and 2-15 in league play with the sweep while the Seahawks slipped to 15-32 and 2-14. The two teams will complete their three-game series Sunday with a single game starting at Noon.

Game one saw the two teams trade runs in the first inning before Drexel plated single runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings to break the 1-all deadlock and record the three-run victory.

Sophomore Maggy Fermo was 2-for-3 with a RBI and run scored while junior Shelby Taylor and sophomore Sylvia Llamas were both 1-for-4 with a run batted in to pace a Dragons lineup that tallied seven base knocks in the opener.

Freshman Tara Konopka picked up the win in the circle for the Dragons to improve to 8-16 on the season. In six innings, Konopka allowed one unearned run on two hits and two walks. Taylor replaced Konopka in the circle in the top of the seventh and retired the side in order to pick up her second save of the season.

Senior Lauryn Buckworth and freshman Jordin Phillips had the Seahawks two base hits in the contest as they both recorded doubles in game one. Sophomore Casey Rowland took the loss for the Seahawks in the opener to move her season mark to 9-13. Rowland surrendered four runs (two earned) on seven hits and two walks as she pitched all seven innings.

In the nightcap, Drexel took a 3-0 lead in the top of the fourth only to see the Seahawks counter with two runs in the bottom half of the frame on a two-out single by senior Olivia Poplin to make it a one-run contest.

The Dragons kept the Seahawks from getting any closer, however, plating a run in each of the final three innings to post a 6-2 triumph.

Sophomore Jill Popek was 2-for-4 with two RBI and junior Maddison Timoteo was 2-for-3 with one run scored for the Dragons in game two.

Taylor picked up the victory for Drexel in game two to improve her mark to 6-13 on the season. Taylor pitched four innings in relief of senior starter Shyann Beach and allowed two runs on eight hits and two walks.

Buckworth went 3-for-4 and Poplin was 2-for-4 with two RBI for UNCW in the nightcap. Sophomore Jordyn Schmidt took the loss for the Seahawks as she moved to 5-15 on the season. Schmidt was charged with five runs (four earned) on five hits and three walks in 5.1 innings in the circle.
