FAIRFAX, VirginiaKelly Secrest pitched out of a bases-loaded jam in the ninth and Ryan LaGrange went 4-for-4 as UNCW topped host George Mason, 4-2, in Colonial Athletic Association baseball action on Friday at Spuhler Field.

The Seahawks, who improved to 7-4 on the road, raised their record to 28-10 overall and 10-2 in the league. GMU, meanwhile, dropped to 13-26 and 5-14.

The Patriots loaded the bases in the bottom of the ninth against Secrest before the lefthander closed out the threat with a lineout to first and a strikeout to end it for his fifth save of the season.

UNCW starter Mat Batts (6-2) earned the win, going six and 2/3 innings, allowing two runs, one earned, on five hits and a pair of walks. He finished with seven strikeouts and lowered his earned run average to 2.28.

Ryan LaGrange had his second straight four-hit outing at the plate and the third of his career. He scored a run and knocked in a run with a two-out double in the seventh inning. Luke Dunlap and Drew Farber added two hits apiece.

Jared Gaynor (2-6) was tagged with the loss despite a strong outing. Gaynor allowed four runs, three earned, on eight hits, two walks and three hit batters over eight innings.

Josh Leemhuis and Brandon Gum each collected two hits for the Patriots.

Up next: The series continues on Saturday with a 2 p.m. start. Jordan Ramsey (6-2, 1.66 ERA) makes his 10th start for the Seahawks while GMU counters with Anthony Montefusco (2-4, 5.44 ERA).

How it happened: The Seahawks mad the most of getting their leadoff hitter on base as all four runs scored were by leadoff hitters and were knocked in with two-out hits. Luke Dunlap gave UNCW the early lead with a RBI single in the third and Terence Connelly did the same in the fourth for a 2-1 lead.

Inside the numbers: UNCW landed its leadoff hitter in 7-of-9 innings while GMU managed just 1-of-9 … Mat Batts recorded just two ground ball outs while reliever Justin Livengood recorded two in his only inning of relief … UNCW improved to 12-0 versus lefthanded starters this season.
