|#25 Diamond Hawks Complete Sweep Of ECU|
GREENVILLE, North Carolina – Ryan LaGrange collected four hits and knocked in three runs to back the four and 2/3 shutout innings of relief from Ricky Holden as UNCW finished off a season sweep of East Carolina with a 7-2 win on Tuesday at Clark-LeClair Stadium.
The Seahawks, who were ranked 25th by Baseball America and Perfect Game, improved to 27-11 with the non-conference road win while the Pirates dropped to 17-20 and 11-12 at home. UNCW swept the Pirates for the first time since 2003 when they edged ECU by identical scores of 4-3 in sweeping the home-and-home series.
Michael Bass and Hunter Ridge added two hits apiece on the night for UNCW. Ridge tripled in LaGrange in the sixth inning and tied Jonathan Batts (2004-07) with 182 career runs batted for the program’s career record.
Holden (4-1) allowed just a pair of hits and struck out two in facing three over the minimum in relief.
ECU starter Nick Durazo (0-4) remained winless on the season, allowing three runs in three-plus innings.
Jack Reinheimer had three hits for the Pirates, who were outhit, 11-7.
Next up: The Seahawks open a three-game series at Colonial Athletic Association foe George Mason on Apr. 19 at 3 p.m.
How it happened: The Seahawks jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first against Durazo as Corey Dick plated the first run with a fielder’s choice and LaGrange followed with a two-run double to the left center field gap. ECU narrowed it to 3-2 in the third before Holden came on and fended off the Pirates until the ninth.
Inside the numbers: UNCW plated all five runs from third with less than two out … The Seahawks put their leadoff hitter on base safely in 6-of-9 innings … ECU was just 2-for-9 in that situation … Both teams were 2-for-11 with two out and neither team had a two-out RBI … Holden did not allow a leadoff hitter to reach safely in five innings.
Notes: Michael Bass extended his on-base streak to 34 games … Luke Dunlap doubled in the ninth inning, his last at bat, to push his hitting streak to a career-long tying eight games … Ricky Holden improved to 7-2 all-time … Christian MacDonald made his second relief appearance of the season and retired both batters he faced to keep the game at 3-2 in the fourth inning … UNCW has allowed just six runs in their brief 3-game winning streak against ECU while scoring 27.
