@UNCWbaseball Game Day
WILMINGTON, North Carolina - The Seahawks open an eight-game road stretch on Tuesday when they visit long time rival East Carolina in the final game of the annual home-and-home series. First pitch is set for 6 p.m.
The Seahawks, who enter an eight-game road stretch, improved to 26-11 on the season with a series win against second-place Delaware and are ranked 25th in both Baseball America’s and Perfect Game’s rankings released Monday. It marks the first time that the program has been ranked since the 2009 season when it opened 17-3 and entered the NCBWA poll at 27th. Since that time the Seahawks have been receiving votes, but not in the rankings.
The Seahawks lead the Colonial Athletic Association with a 9-2 record following their series win over visiting Delaware last weekend.
Leading the Seahawks charge in the series win against Delaware was Mat Batts, who was named CAA Pitcher-of-the-Week after holding the Blue Hens in check in his fourth straight complete game outing. Batts allowed a pair of solo home runs, but did not allow a baserunner past second for the whole game. He walked none and struck out eight, including the final two batters of the game. He set down the final 10 batters of the game in order and faced just four over the minimum. Delaware entered the series with the nation’s second highest batting average and was leading the nation in slugging percentage.
UNCW also moved up to 40th nationally in total attendance following a strong weekend at Brooks Field. The Seahawks have drawn 26,612 spectators this season over 24 dates. UNCW has drawn 1,000 or more fans on 13 occasions this season.
The Pirates, meanwhile, stand at 17-19 overall and won their weekend series at Tulane. Bryan Bass paces the ECU lineup with a .289 batting average while Jack Reinheimer is second at .282. Chase McDonald tops the club with five homers and 23 runs batted in.
Reliever Drew Reynolds has keyed the ECU staff with a 3-1 record, six saves and a 1.44 ERA in 25 innings over 16 appearances. He was credited with both wins during the Tulane series and was named C-USA Pitcher-of-the-Week.
The Seahawks return to conference play this weekend at George Mason. The series opens at 3 p.m. on Friday.
