WILMINGTON, North Carolina – The UNCW softball team will take on a pair of non-conference foes this week as it faces UNCG and Coastal Carolina in midweek competition.

The Seahawks will host the Spartans Tuesday in a 5 p.m. contest at Boseman Field before traveling to Conway Wednesday for a 3 p.m. doubleheader against the Chanticleers.

Seahawk Storylines

  • UNCW (13-24; 2-9 CAA) has a quick turnaround this week as it returns to action a little more than 48 hours after completing a three-game series at Georgia State that saw the Seahawks take one of three contests from the host Panthers.
  • The two teams split their Saturday doubleheader, with GSU taking the opener by an 8-2 margin before UNCW battled back to take the second game, 4-2. In the finale, the Panthers took advantage of a solo home run in the fourth inning to record a 1-0 triumph and take the series.
  • Senior Lauryn Buckworth went 6-for-9 at the plate during the Georgia State series to boost her batting average to a team-leading .330. Buckworth has reached base safely in 34 of 37 games played this season, including 12 of the past 13 contests.
  • Junior KC Shue remains the Seahawks’ top run producer, driving in 24 runs thus far in her first season with the program. Shue has driven in 11 runs over the last nine contests, highlighted by a four-RBI effort in the Seahawks’ 4-2 victory at Georgia State last Saturday.
  • Junior Morgan McCann ranks third on the team with a .286 batting average and is second on the squad with 16 RBI. McCann, who hit her second home run of the season during the series at Georgia State, has reached base safely in each of the past 10 contests.
  • Sophomore Casey Rowland continues to highlight a balanced pitching staff that has seen all four pitchers spend 10.0 or more innings in the circle this season. Rowland, who leads the team in both appearances (23) and games started (18), pitched six shutout innings during the Seahawks’ series at Georgia State last weekend.
  • UNCW has struggled in one-run contests of late as it has have lost each of its last seven contests decided by a single run. The Seahawks moved to 3-7 in one-run games this season with its 1-0 loss to the Panthers in the series finale on Sunday.   
  • The Seahawks have done a majority of their damage at the plate in the fifth inning as they have plated 40 of their 140 runs scored this season in that frame. The Seahawks hold a 40-22 advantage over its opponents in runs scored in that inning.
  • UNCW is 10-4 this season when it records as many or more hits and its opponent. The Seahawks suffered their second setback of the season when out-hitting their opponent, posting an 8-5 advantage in hits during their 1-0 loss at Georgia State on Sunday.
  • UNCW Head Coach Kristy Norton will face her alma mater on Tuesday as Norton enjoyed an outstanding collegiate playing career for the Spartans, earning All-Southern Conference and honorable mention All-South accolades during her four-year career (1999-2002). Norton also spent two seasons (2003-04) as an assistant coach with the program after graduation.

Scouting UNCG

  • UNCG (27-11) looks to build off a solid 4-1 week that included a series victory over conference foe Appalachian State last weekend.
  • Freshman Allison Geiner paces a potent Spartans lineup that is hitting a combined .297 this season with a .381 batting average on 24 hits.
  • Fellow freshman Lindsay Thomas is second on the team with a .378 average that is highlighted by a team-high 13 home runs and 31 RBI. Junior Katelyn Bedwell is third with a .372 average on 45 hits, five doubles, eight home runs and a team-high 39 RBI.
  • Redshirt junior Raeanne Hanks leads the Spartans pitching staff with a 17-5 record in 27 appearances. Hanks has fashioned a 2.07 ERA in 138.2 innings of work while striking out 135 batters in that span.  

Series Notes Versus UNCG

  • UNCG holds a 33-14-1 lead in the all-time series with UNCW that dates back to the 1985 season.
  • The Spartans have won each of the past six meetings between the two programs, including their most recent matchup, a 4-0 victory at the Green and White Classic in Charlotte during the 2009 season.
  • UNCW is 7-13-1 versus UNCG at home. The Spartans were victorious in their most recent visit to Boseman Field, capturing a 1-0 victory during the 2008 Seahawk Classic.

Scouting Coastal Carolina

  • Like UNCW, Coastal Carolina (25-18) begins the week with a Tuesday contest, a league affair versus Charleston Southern, before welcoming the Seahawks Wednesday to Conway.
  • The Chanticleers are led offensively by senior Cacia Pierre, who is hitting a team-best .358 with 24 RBI. Pierre also leads the team with 19 walks.
  • Sophomore Cory Hayden has driven in a team-best 33 runs this season on the strength of 21 extra-base hits, including 13 home runs. Hayden is one of five CCU players to start all 43 games played thus far.
  • Junior Ashley Bagwell and sophomore Kiana Quolas have spent a majority of time in the circle for the Chanticleers this season. Bagwell has struck out a team-high 112 batters in 97.2 innings in the circle while Quolas has fashioned a 2.10 ERA and a 14-9 record in 27 appearances.

Series Notes Versus Coastal Carolina

  • Coastal Carolina holds a 66-23 record against UNCW in a series that seen the two teams meet on the diamond in each of the past 26 seasons.
  • The Chanticleers have won six straight and eight of the past 10 meetings between the two programs, including a sweep of their doubleheader last April at Boseman Field that saw CCU take the opener, 10-0, before recording a 1-0 triumph in the nightcap.
  • The Seahawks are 11-31 in 42 previous matchups with the Chanticleers in Conway. UNCW last posted a road victory over CCU with a 7-4 victory on April 8, 2009.

Rowland Named CAA Pitcher-of-the-Week

UNCW sophomore hurler Casey Rowland was named CAA Pitcher-of-the-Week on Feb. 11.

  • A native of Albany, N.Y., Rowland went 2-0 in three appearances in the season-opening UNCW Beach Blast Feb. 8-10. She struck out 12 in 13.1 innings while limiting opponents to a .114 batting average as she helped the Seahawks post a 3-2 record in the event.
  • Rowland opened the tournament with a one-hit shutout of Detroit and followed that performance with a complete-game effort against Iona that saw her scatter three hits and two walks in a 2-1 victory.
  • She closed the weekend with a relief appearance against Detroit that saw her strike out three in 1.1 innings of work.

Matkins Nabs CAA Rookie Honor

Freshman outfielder Taylor Matkins was named CAA Co-Rookie-of-the-Week, league officials announced on March 12.

  • Matkins fashioned a .500 (6-of-12) batting average with four RBI and four runs scored in helping UNCW to a 4-1 record during the week of March 4-10.
  • The Greenville, N.C., product opened the week with a 3-for-6 effort that included three RBI and three runs scored in a doubleheader sweep of North Carolina A&T. Matkins followed that performance with three hits in three trips to the plate in the Seahawks' 7-3 victory over Presbyterian in the opening game of the NCCU Eagle Challenge on March 9.

Rowland Enters Career Strikeout Chart

Sophomore hurler Casey Rowland recently moved into the program's top 10 list for strikeouts in a career.

  • With her 12 strikeouts during the Seahawk Clash in late February, Rowland moved into 10th place on the program's career strikeouts chart as she surpassed Heather Petroff (162).
  • Rowland begins the weekend with 222 career strikeouts and needs just five more K’s to match Jamie Gostyla (2002-05) for seventh place on the all-time list (227).

The Norton Era Begins With A Win

The Seahawks gave first-year head coach Kristy Norton a victory in her UNCW debut, an 8-0 triumph over Detroit on Feb. 8 in the Seahawk Clash. Norton became the first UNCW head coach to win her inaugural game since Melissa Jarrell posted a 6-5 victory over Drexel to begin the 2002 season.

The Run Game

  • The Seahawks are 61-17-1 since the start of the 2008 season when they score five or more runs in a game.
  • UNCW is 8-2 this season when plating five or more runs in a game. The Seahawks suffered their second loss under such circumstances with a 6-5 extra innings setback to George Mason in their series finale on Sunday.
  • The Seahawks are 11-163 since the start of the 2008 season when they are held to two or fewer runs in a game.
  • UNCW is 1-18 in 2013 when plating two runs or less in a game. The Seahawks lone win when scoring two run or less came in a 2-1 victory over Iona in the UNCW Beach Blast on Feb. 8.

Let’s Keep Playing

UNCW recently played the longest game in program history with a 12-inning contest at George Mason on March 30.

  • The contest broke the previous program record for the longest game of 11 innings, set on five prior occasions, including a 5-4 victory versus the Patriots last March at Boseman Field.
  • UNCW unfortunately found itself on the losing end of things this time around as it suffered a 6-5 setback to the Patriots.

UNCW returns its focus to conference play this weekend as it hosts Towson in a three-game Colonial Athletic Association series at Boseman Field. The Seahawks and Tigers will play a doubleheader Saturday and a single game Sunday, with action on both days scheduled to begin at Noon.
