Game Notes UNCW

WILMINGTON, North Carolina - The Seahawks host Delaware this weekend in a key Colonial Athletic Association series between the top two teams in the standings. UNCW leads the Blue Hens by winning percentage.

UNCW topped Elon on Wednesday, 8-5, as the Seahawks pulled out to an 8-1 lead in the seventh inning before fending off the Phoenix to complete a sweep of the annual home-and-home series with their long time rivals.

Tyler Molinaro homered, scored three runs and knocked in three runs to key the offense while Luke Dunlap drove in three runs while connecting on his third home run of the season.

UD, meanwhile, enters the series as one of the hottest teams in the nation with a 13-game winning streak which was extended with a 6-3 win at UMBC earlier this week.

Jimmy Yezzo and Nick Ferdinand each collected three hits on the evening with Ferdinand driving in three runs. Brock Niggebrugge also had three hits and collected three RBI’s to fuel the UD bottom of the lineup.

Yezzo’s .450 batting average and 42 runs batted in rank among the conference leaders while Ferdinand is hitting .397 with 36 RBI’s. Delaware is ranked second in the nation with a .335 batting average.

On the mound, senior Matt Soren is 2-1 in nine appearances, including four starts, and has a 1.69 earned run average. Friday starter Chad Kuhl is 5-1.

Michael Bass continues to lead the Seahawks with a .406 average and 36 runs scored. Luke Dunlap and Ryan LaGrange are hitting .349 and .347, respectively.

Jordan Ramsey owns a 5-2 mark and a staff-leading 1.60 ERA. Mat Batts is 4-2 with a 2.44 ERA and co-reigning CAA Pitcher-of-the-Week Christian MacDonald is 4-0 (2.91).

This weekend’s series is a rematch of the 2012 CA Championship where UNCW captured its third conference title with a win over the Blue Hens.
