Seahawk Storylines

  • UNCW (11-18) completes a five-game road swing Wednesday after taking one of three games during a three-game CAA series at George Mason last weekend.
  • Both of the Seahawks losses to the Patriots came in extra innings as Mason claimed a 2-1 victory in 12 innings in the series opener before posting a nine-inning 6-5 triumph in the series finale. UNCW won the second game of the series by an 8-2 margin.
  • The 12-inning game marked the longest contest in program history for the Seahawks, breaking the previous program record of 11 innings, set on five previous occasions.
  • Senior Olivia Poplin was 6-for-15 at the plate during the Mason series to take the team lead with a .322 batting average. Poplin, who also leads the team with 13 walks, will bring a four-game hitting streak into Wednesday’s doubleheader against the Pirates.  
  • Senior Lauryn Buckworth continues to pace the squad with 26 hits. Buckworth has reached base safely in 27 of 29 games played this season, including each of the past five contests.
  • Junior KC Shue tallied a team-high four RBI in the series with the Patriots to raise her team-leading RBI total to 17. She is one of four players to have recorded double-digit RBI this season.
  • Junior Kimmie Stewart became the first UNCW player to record four hits in a game this season as she was 4-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored in the Seahawks 8-2 victory over George Mason on Saturday.
  • Sophomore Casey Rowland remains the anchor of a balanced UNCW rotation that has seen all four pitchers spend 10 or more innings in the circle this season. Rowland, who leads the team with 18 appearances and 13 starts, went 1-1 on the weekend as she allowed four runs (two earned) in 13.1 innings in the circle against the Patriots.
  • UNCW has struggled in one-run contests of late as they have lost their last five contests decided by a single run. The Seahawks, who dropped a pair of one-run decisions at George Mason last weekend, are 3-5 in one-run games this season.  
  • The Seahawks have done a majority of their damage at the plate in the fifth inning as they have plated 38 of its 123 runs scored this season in that frame. The Seahawks hold a 38-13 advantage over its opponents in runs scored in that inning. 
  • UNCW is 10-3 this season when it records as many or more hits and its opponent. The Seahawks suffered their first setback of the season when out-hitting their opponent, posting a 10-7 advantage in hits during their 6-5 loss to George Mason in their series finale on Sunday.
  • Junior Camry Wagner is the only player that has started all 29 games for the Seahawks this season. Six other players have been in the starting lineup for 20 or more contests thus far.

Scouting East Carolina

  • East Carolina (13-21) will look to build some momentum heading into the home stretch of the regular season after posting a series sweep of UTEP last weekend in Texas.
  • The Pirates are led offensively by junior Kristi Oshiro, who has fashioned a .400 batting average to go along with a team-high 29 runs scored. Oshiro has struck out just four times in 100 at-bats this season.
  • Junior Alex Fieldhouse has served as the program’s top run producer this season, driving in 29 runs on the strength of a team-best 18 extra-base hits. Fieldhouse was named Conference USA Hitter-of-the-Week on Monday after posting  .412 batting in five games last week.
  • Sarah Christian has served as the ace of the Pirates rotation, making a team-high 25 appearances and 18 starts this season. Christian has fashioned a 2.98 ERA in 119.2 innings pitched and leads the team with 77 strikeouts.

Series Notes Versus East Carolina

  • East Carolina holds a 79-14 lead over UNCW in a series that dates back to the 1985 season.
  • The two programs have met on the diamond in each season since the series’ inception.
  • The Pirates have controlled the play of late, winning 14 of the last 15 meetings between the two programs. The Seahawks lone win in that span was a 2-1 triumph at Boseman Field on April 6, 2011.
  • UNCW holds a 6-34 record against the Pirates in true road contests. The Seahawks suffered an 8-0 setback in their most recent visit to Greenville on Feb. 16, 2011.

Rowland Named CAA Pitcher-of-the-Week

UNCW sophomore hurler Casey Rowland was named CAA Pitcher-of-the-Week on Feb. 11.

  • A native of Albany, N.Y., Rowland went 2-0 in three appearances in the season-opening UNCW Beach Blast Feb. 8-10. She struck out 12 in 13.1 innings while limiting opponents to a .114 batting average as she helped the Seahawks post a 3-2 record in the event.
  • Rowland opened the tournament with a one-hit shutout of Detroit and followed that performance with a complete-game effort against Iona that saw her scatter three hits and two walks in a 2-1 victory.
  • She closed the weekend with a relief appearance against Detroit that saw her strike out three in 1.1 innings of work.

Matkins Nabs CAA Rookie Honor

Freshman outfielder Taylor Matkins was named CAA Co-Rookie-of-the-Week, league officials announced on March 12.

  • Matkins fashioned a .500 (6-of-12) batting average with four RBI and four runs scored in helping UNCW to a 4-1 record during the week of March 4-10.
  • The Greenville, N.C., product opened the week with a 3-for-6 effort that included three RBI and three runs scored in a doubleheader sweep of North Carolina A&T. Matkins followed that performance with three hits in three trips to the plate in the Seahawks' 7-3 victory over Presbyterian in the opening game of the NCCU Eagle Challenge on March 9.

Rowland Enters Career Strikeout Chart

Sophomore hurler Casey Rowland recently moved into the program's top 10 list for strikeouts in a career.

  • With her 12 strikeouts during the Seahawk Clash in late February, Rowland moved into 10th place on the program's career strikeouts chart as she surpassed Heather Petroff (162).
  • Rowland begins the week with 215 career strikeouts as she is tied with Amanda Wilson (2002-05) for ninth place on the program’s all-time list (215).

The Norton Era Begins With A Win

The Seahawks gave first-year head coach Kristy Norton a victory in her UNCW debut, an 8-0 triumph over Detroit on Feb. 8 in the Seahawk Clash. Norton became the first UNCW head coach to win her inaugural game since Melissa Jarrell posted a 6-5 victory over Drexel to begin the 2002 season.

The Run Game

  • ·The Seahawks are 60-17-1 since the start of the 2008 season when they score five or more runs in a game.
  • UNCW is 7-2 this season when plating five or more runs in a game. The Seahawks suffered their second loss under such circumstances with a 6-5 extra innings setback to George Mason in their series finale on Sunday.
  • The Seahawks are 11-157 since the start of the 2008 season when they are held to two or fewer runs in a game.
  • UNCW is 1-12 in 2013 when plating two runs or less in a game. The Seahawks lone win when scoring two run or less came in a 2-1 victory over Iona in the UNCW Beach Blast on Feb. 8.
