FAIRFAX, Virginia – A single by junior Tiffany Webb in the bottom of the ninth broke a 5-all tie and lifted George Mason to a 6-5 victory over UNCW in the finale of a three-game Colonial Athletic Association softball series Sunday at the George Mason Softball Complex.

The Patriots improved to 9-22 overall and 2-4 in league play as they claimed the series following a split of Saturday’s series-opening doubleheader. The Seahawks moved to 11-18 and 1-4 with the extra-innings setback.

Webb was 2-for-5 with one RBI while sophomore Angela Morain went 1-for-3 with three RBI to pace the Patriots lineup. Sophomore Casey Herring picked up the victory for Mason to move to 2-5 on the season. Herring pitched 2.1 innings in relief of starter sophomore Anna Blessing and issued just one walk.

Junior KC Shue was 3-for-4 with four RBI and sophomore Casey Rowland went 2-for-4 with a run batted in for UNCW. Rowland took the loss for the Seahawks in the circle to even her season mark at 7-7. In six innings in relief of sophomore starter Jordyn Schmidt, Rowland allowed two runs (one earned) on five hits. She struck out three.

Trailing 5-1 after a five-run inning by Patriots in the bottom of the third, UNCW rallied to force extra innings, plating two runs in the fifth on a RBI single by Shue before using run-scoring singles from Shue and Rowland in the top of the seventh to knot the score at 5-all.

The teams would remain tied until the bottom of the ninth, when back-to-back errors put runners on the corners for Webb, who would single up the middle to bring home freshman Lindsay O’Conner for the decisive run.

UNCW returns to action Wednesday with a 4 p.m. doubleheader at state rival East Carolina.
