NORFOLK, VirginiaMat Batts struck out eight and scattered three hits in tossing his second straight complete game shutout to lead UNCW past Old Dominion, 1-0, in the Colonial Athletic Association series opener on Friday at the Metheny Baseball Complex.

The Seahawks improved to 18-8 overall and 5-1 in the league while the Monarch dropped to 13-11 and 4-6. UNCW ran its record on the road to 2-3 on the season.

Corey Dick finished 2-for-4 on the night and drove in the game’s lone run with a RBI single in the second.

Josh Eldridge had two hits for ODU.

ODU starter Dean Ali (1-2) suffered the tough luck loss despite allowing just the one run on five hits and a walk over eight innings. He finished with five strike outs.

Next up: The series continues on Saturday with a 3 p.m. start.

How it happened: UNCW scored the only run of the game in the second inning, early in the pitching duel between Batts and Ali. Luke Dunlap doubled to left and would score on batter later on Dick’s single to left. ODU threatened in the sixth putting runners on second and third with two out, but Batts ended the threat with a strikeout.

Inside the numbers: Both teams combined to go 1-for-24 with runners on base, 1-for-16 in RBI opportunities … Neither team had a hit with two out … UNCW left three runners in scoring position while ODU stranded four.

Notes: Michael Bass extended his hitting streak to 22 games with a single in the sixth, it also extended his on base streak to 28 … In the third, he stole his 14th straight base of the season … Batts lowered his ERA to 2.47 … Terence Connelly’s on base streak ended at 18 games … Corey Dick is hitting .533 (8-for-15) during his five-game hitting streak.
