RALEIGH, North
Carolina - UNCW and the Carolina RailHawks turned up the offense in the
second, combing for six goals as the clubs battled to a 3-all stalemate in a
soccer exhibition at WakeMed Soccer Park in Raleigh last weekend.
Neither team would score in the opening half, but that would
all change in the second half beginning with a penalty kick goal by UNCW's
Mateo Cardona. The penalty was set up when Jamie Dell was fouled in the penalty
area.
Carolina would score the next two goals to take the lead before
the Seahawks would tie the game for the first of two times in the half. Jack
Ward drew the Seahawks level with a left-footed salvo that tied the game at
2-all.
The RailHawks netted the next goal to go back in front 3-2,
but Colin Bonner would tie the game when he converted a rebound off a shot by
Nathaniel Goodwin with five minutes remaining in the second half.
"Any time you score
three goals in a game, it's pleasing, but to do so against the caliber of team
as strong as the Railhawks, it is especially pleasing," said UNCW Head Coach
Aidan Heaney. "We passed the ball better and showed more courage to do so in
the second half, and were rewarded for our endeavor. Jack Ward scored a
tremendous goal, and the quality that Nathaniel showed in the buildup to Colin
Bonner's goal was excellent. It was an encouraging start to our spring season."
The Seahawks continue their spring exhibition season hosting
the hometown Wilmington Hammerheads on Mar. 27. The Hammerheads feature a trio
of former UNCW standouts in Shawn Utterson, Daniel Roberts and Christian
Davidson.
