WILMINGTON, North Carolina
- UNCW freshman outfielder Taylor Matkins was named CAA Co-Rookie-of-the-Week,
league officials announced on Tuesday.
Matkins, who shared the honor with Delaware's Gabby Klecko,
became the second Seahawk to earn weekly distinction from the league this
season as sophomore Casey Rowland was recognized as the league's Pitcher-of-the-Week
on Feb. 12.
"Taylor really stepped her offensive performance
last week and was an anchor for our outfield in some very difficult weather
conditions," said UNCW head coach Kristy Norton. "I'm very proud of her
efforts."
Matkins fashioned
a .500 (6-of-12) batting average with four RBI and four runs scored in helping
UNCW to a 4-1 record last week. The Greenville, N.C., product opened the week
with a 3-for-6 effort that included three RBI and three runs scored in a
doubleheader sweep of North Carolina A&T. Matkins followed that performance
with three hits in three trips to the plate in the Seahawks' 7-3 victory over
Presbyterian in the opening game of the NCCU Eagle Challenge on March 9.
UNCW (10-12) returns to action Saturday as it
hosts USC Upstate in a 1 p.m. doubleheader at Boseman Field.
