DURHAM, North Carolina - Sophomore Casey Rowland scattered three hits and struck out 10 to lead UNCW to a 3-1 victory over Liberty in the NCCU Eagle Challenge Saturday at Parkwood Field.

The Seahawks improved to 10-12 overall as it completed the NCCU Eagle Challenge with a 2-1 record while the Lady Flames slipped to 5-8. UNCW was slated to play a second game against host North Carolina Central on Saturday, but the contest was postponed due to facility issues. The two teams will make up the contest in Wilmington at a later date.

Rowland allowed just one unearned run in seven innings of work as she improved to 6-5 on the season. The Albany, N.Y., product did not allow a hit until the sixth inning as she recorded double-digit strikeouts for the first time this season and the third time in her career.

UNCW took a 2-0 lead in the top of the third. Rowland opened the inning with a walk and used a sacrifice bunt and a stolen base to advance to third before being brought home on a squeeze play by junior Morgan McCann. Junior KC Shue would plate the Seahawks second run of the frame two batters later on a single to left field that scored senior Lauryn Buckworth, who reached base with a double to right.

Sophomore Jordan Critcher increased the UNCW advantage to 3-0 in the fourth as she hit her team-leading third home run of the season, a solo blast to left field.

The Lady Flames would trim the Seahawks advantage in the bottom of the sixth, using a run-scoring single from Katie Zavodny to make it a 3-1 contest.

Liberty would bring the tying run to the plate in its final at-bat after a two-out single by Megan Robinson, but Rowland would retire the next batter she faced to end the contest.

Seven players tallied one hit apiece to account for the Seahawks' seven base hits in the contest, highlighted by solo home run from Critcher and doubles from Buckworth and sophomore Jessica Rappe.

Robinson was 2-for-3 and Zavodny 1-for-3 to account for the Lady Flames three hits. Jo Annah Brittingham took the loss for Liberty in the circle, allowing three runs on six hits and two walks. She struck out four.
