Carolina - The UNCW softball team plays its first midweek games of the 2013
season Wednesday as it travels to Greensboro to face North Carolina A&T in
a 1 p.m. doubleheader at the Lady Aggies Softball Complex.

Seahawk Storylines

UNCW (6-11) posted a 0-4 record in the
Charleston Southern Buccaneer Invitational last weekend, suffering a pair of
losses to No. 7 Tennessee (9-1 & 9-0) and singular setbacks to Valparaiso
(16-1) and host Charleston Southern (5-4).

The Seahawks struggled at the plate during the CSU
Buccaneer Invitational, recording just six hits in 75 plate appearances.
(.080). Senior Olivia Poplin and junior KC Shue tallied two hits apiece to pace
the UNCW lineup.

The Seahawks pitching staff also a rough weekend
in Low Country, combining for a 12.66 ERA in 21.1 innings pitched. The trio of
hurlers combined to surrender 37 hits during the tournament, including 12 for
extra bases.

UNCW suffered its first one-run loss of the
season with its 5-4 setback to Charleston Southern in the tournament finale. The
Seahawks are now 3-1 on the season in one-run contests.

UNCW is 6-1 this season when it records as many
or more hits and its opponent. The only loss under such circumstances came in a
6-2 loss to Nebraska-Omaha that saw both teams finished with seven base knocks
in the contest.

The Seahawks moved to 0-4 this season against
ranked competition with its pair of losses to the nationally-ranked Volunteers.

Senior Lauryn Buckworth continues to pace the
UNCW lineup as she leads the team with a .395 batting average and 10 RBI.
Buckworth has reached base safely in all but one of the team's 17 contests this
season.

Junior Camry Wagner and freshman Erin Brown are
the only two players that have started all 17 games this season for the
Seahawks. Wagner has seen time at both shortstop and the designated player
positions while Brown has split time between four positions (C, 2B, LF &
CF).
Scouting North
Carolina A&T

North Carolina A&T (1-6) enters Wednesday's
doubleheader looking to halt a four-game losing skid after dropping all four of
its contests in the Wolfpack Challenge last weekend in Raleigh.

The Lady Aggies are led offensively by Alejandra
Barcenas, who leads the team with a .350 batting average and five RBI. Four of
Barcenas seven hits this season have been for extra bases.

In the circle, North Carolina A&T has relied
heavily upon the duo of Jankika May and Ashira Dobison. Together, the two have
combined to pitch 36.0 of the team's 42.0 innings in the field, allowing 54
runs on 62 hits and 25 walks in that span.

The Lady Aggies are coached by Mamie Jones, who
is in her 16th season with the program. Jones has led the team to winning
records in four of the past six seasons.
Series Notes Versus
North Carolina A&T

UNCW holds a 30-7-1 all-time record versus North
Carolina A&T. The two teams are meeting for the eighth straight season
programs have met on the diamond in all but three of the previous 18 seasons
(2000, 2002 & 2005).

The Seahawks have won three straight in the
series, including a doubleheader sweep at Boseman Field last March that saw
UNCW defeat the Lady Aggies by margins of 10-0 and 1-0.

UNCW is 14-3-1 in true road contests against
North Carolina A&T. The Seahawks last visit to the Lady Aggies Softball
Complex came on March 23, 2011 in a doubleheader that saw the Lady Aggies take
the opener,6-5 , before the Seahawks rebounded to win the nightcap, 6-2.
Rowland
Named CAA Pitcher-of-the-Week
UNCW sophomore hurler Casey Rowland was named CAA Pitcher-of-the-Week on Feb. 11.
- A native of Albany, N.Y., Rowland went 2-0 in three
appearances in the season-opening UNCW Beach Blast Feb. 8-10. She struck
out 12 in 13.1 innings while limiting opponents to a .114 batting average
as she helped the Seahawks post a 3-2 record in the event.
- Rowland opened the tournament with a one-hit shutout of
Detroit and followed that performance with a complete-game effort against
Iona that saw her scatter three hits and two walks in a 2-1 victory.
- She closed the weekend with a relief appearance against
Detroit that saw her strike out three in 1.1 innings of work.
Rowland
Enters Career Strikeout Chart
Sophomore hurler Casey Rowland recently moved into the program's top 10 list for
strikeouts in a career.
- With her 12 strikeouts during the Seahawk Clash in late
February, Rowland moved into 10th place on the program's career strikeouts
chart as she surpassed Heather Petroff (162).
- Rowland begins the weekend with 181 career strikeouts
and is just 34 k's away from matching Amanda Wilson (2002-05) for ninth
place on the all-time list (215).
The
Norton Era Begins With A Win
The Seahawks gave first-year head
coach Kristy Norton a victory in her UNCW debut, an 8-0 triumph over Detroit on
Feb. 8 in the Seahawk Clash.
- Norton became the first UNCW head coach to win her
inaugural game since Melissa Jarrell posted a 6-5 victory over Drexel to
begin the 2002 season.
The
Run Game
- The Seahawks are 56-16-1 since the start of the 2008
season when they score five or more runs in a game.
- UNCW is 3-1 this season when plating five or more runs
in a game. The only loss under such circumstances came in a 13-10 setback
to Savannah State during the Florida Lipton Invitational on Feb. 16.
- The Seahawks are 11-153 since the start of the 2008
season when they are held to two or fewer runs in a game.
- UNCW is 1-8 in 2013 when plating two runs or less in a
game. The Seahawks lone win when scoring two run or less came in a 2-1
victory over Iona in the UNCW Beach Blast on Feb. 8.
Up Next
UNCW will travel to Durham to take part in the Eagle
Challenge, hosted by North Carolina Central. The Seahawks will face
Presbyterian twice on Friday (1 and 3:15 p.m.) before closing out the event
Saturday with contests versus Liberty (4:15 p.m.) and the host Eagles (6:30
p.m.).
