WILMINGTON, North
Carolina - Andy Austin's drew a bases loaded walk off reliever Connor
Scarborough in the bottom of the 11th to rally UNCW for a 7-6 win over
Gardner-Webb on Sunday at Brooks Field.
The Seahawks, who played their third straight extra inning
contest, improved to 6-5 while the Bulldogs dropped to 7-3-1 with the road
loss. It was the first game between the two schools since 1976.
Gardner-Webb collected 18 hits on the afternoon with J.J.
Nazzaro, Ryan Hodge and Scott Johnson each had three hits. Michael Bass led the
Seahawks with two hits and two runs scored at the top of the lineup.
Ricky Holden (2-1) picked the win in relief with five
strikeouts. Scarborough (1-1) was tagged with the loss out of the bullpen. He
walked four in two innings of work.
UNCW turned a school-record tying five double plays,
including one in each of the first four innings.
Next Up: The
Seahawks visit Charleston for the second time this season when they visit
College of Charleston on Mar. 5 for a 3 p.m. start.
How it happened:
Freshman Steven Linkous opened the 11th with a walk and advanced to second on a
sacrifice bunt, but Scarborough's throw to second sailed into center field
allowing Linkous to advance to third. An intentional walk to Bass loaded the
bases for Austin, who worked a full count before seeing ball four and forcing
in the winning run.
Game of Swings:
UNCW jumped out to a 4-1 lead after one inning, but Gardner-Webb answered with
its own four-run stanza in the sixth against four Seahawk pitchers to take a
6-5 lead. GWU had three two-out RBI hits in the frame. In the ninth, Drew
Farber singled home Linkous, who entered as a pinch runner, with the tying run.

Seahawks went 2-1 in the Hughes Bros. Challenge with all three games going to
extra innings ... Bass has no reached safely in all 11 games and has a 13-game
streak dating back to last season ... He also has a seven-game hitting streak ... UNCW
is 3-1 in one-run games and 2-2 in games when trailing in the seventh inning ... With
