WILMINGTON, North Carolina - The UNCW softball team returns home this weekend as it welcomes Gardner-Webb, UMBC and Morehead State to the Port City for the Seahawk Clash tournament at Boseman Field.

Due to the threat of rain in the Wilmington area Friday and early Saturday, the schedule for the Seahawk Clash has been adjusted. A complete tournament schedule is listed below. Be sure to check back with UNCWsports.com for additional updates, should they become necessary.

Seahawk Notes

  • UNCW (4-6) returns home following a 1-4 finish at the Florida Lipton Invitational last weekend in Gainesville, Fla. The Seahawks defeated Charleston Southern (6-5), but fell to No. 5 Florida (10-0 & 9-1), Savannah State (13-10) and Western Carolina (4-1) during the three-day event.
  • Senior Lauryn Buckworth continued her solid start to the season, going 7-for-13 (.538) at the plate during the FLI with two RBI. In 10 games this season, Buckworth has already recorded 14 hits and a team-best seven RBI thus far. She also leads the team with six walks drawn.
  • Sophomore Jordan Critcher also had a strong weekend at the plate during the FLI, going 4-for-9 (.444) with three extra-base knocks, including a pair of home runs.
  • Freshman CJ Moose also made her presence felt offensively in Gainesville, going 5-for-14 with two home runs and a team-best four RBI.
  • The Seahawk pitching staff will look to bounce back in the Seahawk Clash following a rough weekend in the FLI that saw the rotation combine to allow 41 runs (39 earned) in 29.1 innings pitched. The staff was charged with 47 hits and issued 21 walks during the tournament.
  • The Seahawks continue to be aggressive on the base paths, going 5-for-7 in stolen base attempts during the FLI. UNCW is 15-for-20 in stolen base attempts for the season, nearly doubling their total in both categories for the 2012 season (8-of-11).
  • UNCW was once again able to pull out a one-run contest, defeating Charleston Southern, 6-5, to move to 3-0 this season in one-run games. The Seahawks were just 4-9 last season in one-run affairs.

Scouting Gardner-Webb

  • Gardner-Webb (0-4) heads to the coastline in search of its first victory of the season after dropping a pair of doubleheaders to Furman and USC Upstate to begin the season.
  • The Runnin' Bulldogs have been paced at the plate in the early going by junior Samantha Meenaghan, who is hitting .500 with three extra-base knocks. Junior Morgan Baker has driven in a team-best three runs on the strength of a team-high three doubles.
  • Gardner-Webb has relied upon a two-player rotation in the circle thus far as junior Alyssa Gutierrez and junior Ashley Rhyne has combined to pitch 23 of 24 innings played. The duo has combined to allow 17 runs on 29 hits and six walks while striking out 13 in that span.
  • Head Coach Tom Cole is in his 13th season at the helm of the Runnin' Bulldogs program. The program's all-time leader in victories, Cole led Gardner-Webb to a 28-28 mark during the 2012 season.

Series Notes Versus Gardner-Webb

  • Gardner-Webb holds an 8-5 lead in the all-time series with UNCW.
  • The two teams are meeting for the fourth straight season as the Runnin' Bulldogs make their fourth straight appearance in the Seahawk Clash.
  • Gardner-Webb has held the edge in the series of late, winning seven of the last nine matchups. The Runnin' Bulldogs won all three meetings between the two programs last season, sweeping their two games in the Seahawk Classic in February before knocking off UNCW in a neutral-site game at the Winthrop/Adidas Invitational in March.
Scouting Morehead State
  • Morehead State (1-3) returns to the road this weekend after opening the season in the Felsberg Memorial Tournament at Florida International.
  • Junior Stephanie Etter paced the Eagles lineup during its season-opening tournament, fashioning a .438 batting average to go along with three runs scored and three RBI. Senior Amber Riddle will look to become the program's all-time home run leader this weekend as she needs just two more home runs to match the program mark of 30.
  • Senior pitcher Katie Pfost had a solid start to the season in the circle, earning the only win of the weekend with a 2-1 victory over Binghampton. Pfost finished the tournament with a 1-1 mark in three appearances, including two complete games, allowing just two earned runs while recording 13 strikeouts.
  • Head Coach David Williams is in hissecond year with the Eagles program. William took over at Morehead State after a successful tenure at Mars Hill College, where he led the Lions to five straight winning seasons and a 2010 NCAA regional appearance.

  • UNCW and Morehead State will face each other for the first time during the Seahawk Clash
Scouting UMBC
  • UMBC (0-5) looks to get into the win column during the Seahawk Clash after opening the season with five losses in the Jimmy John's Lion Classic at Southeastern Louisiana last weekend.
  • Junior Chelsea Bertoglio batted .500 (6-for-12) with a pair of doubles and a home run to lead the Retrievers lineup during the opening weekend while sophomore catcher Taylor Hall paced the team with 10 runs batted in.
  • The UMBC rotation has yet to be determined as UMBC used all five of its pitchers during the Jimmy John's Lion Classic, with each one earning a start in the tournament. Sophomore Miranda Clark worked a team-high 7.2 innings in three appearances and held opponents to a .281 batting average.
  • Joe French is in his 12th season as head coach of the Retrievers. UMBC's all-time leader in victories, French has amassed a career record of 346-281 during his time with the program

Series Notes Versus UMBC

  • UNCW leads the all-time series with UMBC by an 11-5 margin.
  • The two teams are meeting for the first time since the 2006 season, a contest that saw the Seahawks post a 4-1 victory over the Retrievers during the 2006 edition of the Seahawk Clash.
  • Nine of the previous 16 meetings have taken place in Wilmington. The Seahawks hold a 7-2 mark against the Retrievers in games played in the Port City.

Rowland Named CAA Pitcher-of-the-Week

UNCW sophomore hurler Casey Rowland was named CAA Pitcher-of-the-Week on Feb. 11.

  • A native of Albany, N.Y., Rowland went 2-0 in three appearances in the season-opening UNCW Beach Blast Feb. 8-10. She struck out 12 in 13.1 innings while limiting opponents to a .114 batting average as she helped the Seahawks post a 3-2 record in the event.
  • Rowland opened the tournament with a one-hit shutout of Detroit and followed that performance with a complete-game effort against Iona that saw her scatter three hits and two walks in a 2-1 victory.
  • She closed the weekend with a relief appearance against Detroit that saw her strike out three in 1.1 innings of work.

The Norton Era Begins With A Win

The Seahawks gave first-year head coach Kristy Norton a victory in her UNCW debut, an 8-0 triumph over Detroit on Feb. 8 in the Seahawk Clash.

  • Norton became the first UNCW head coach to win her inaugural game since Melissa Jarrell posted a 6-5 victory over Drexel to begin the 2002 season.
