WILMINGTON, North Carolina - The 39th-ranked UNCW men's tennis team made it two easy wins on the weekend with a convincing 8-1 victory over visiting Winthrop on Sunday at the UNCW courts.

Playing under sunny skies, the Seahawks increased their record to 5-1 by playing the nine-point format for the second time this spring.

"Winthrop is a very talented, but young team," said sixth-year UNCW Head Coach Mait DuBois. "They came out with a lot of intensity. We were able to get some good things going early and we never really let off the gas. Our group really maintained a high level of focus and energy and today was a great team effort. Kaue Pereira and Rafael Aita came out on fire and rest of the group fed off of it."

UNCW secured the doubles point in just 40 minutes on Sunday after the top two units won easily. The No. 1 team of Kosta Blank and Chris Cooprider, ranked 10th nationally by the ITA, blanked Peter Nagovnak and Yuta Hirokawa, 8-0, before the No. 2 tandem of  Aita and Sam Williams cruised past Dylan Comerford and Corey DeCandia, 8-2.

In singles, the Seahawks dominated and only lost one singles match in the rout.

Pereira, playing No. 2 singles, was first off the court after dispatching Juan Pablo Boada, 6-1, 6-0, and Aita, ranked 37th nationally, followed suit with a 6-1, 6-1 romp over Comerford at the top of the lineup. No. 121 Williams then tacked on a 6-2, 6-1 triumph against Hirokawa at No. 3 singles.

Chris Cooprider, then added a 7-6 (5), 6-1 decision over Nagovnak at the No. 2 slot, while Zach Hublitz and Michael Reilly recorded victories at No. 5 and No. 6

At No. 7, junior Pedro Mol breezed past Michael Chen, 6-1, 6-0, before Winthrop's Iva Aramburu picked up the Eagles' lone point with a 6-4, 6-1 victory against UNCW freshman Christiaan Van der Burgh.

The Seahawks play their next match on Wednesday, Feb. 20, when they travel to Columbia, S.C., to take on South Carolina.
