WILMINGTON, North Carolina - Sophomore Casey Rowland scattered one hit and struck out seven to lead UNCW to an 8-0 victory over Detroit in opening day action in the UNCW Beach Blast at Boseman Field Friday.

The Seahawks were unable to complete the opening-day sweep, however, falling to Nebraska-Omaha in the nightcap by a 6-2 margin.

Action in the UNCW Beach Blast continues on Saturday with four games. Iona faces Nebraska-Omaha at 9 a.m. followed by Detroit and Nebraska-Omaha at 11:30 a.m. UNCW begins Saturday play with a 2 p.m. contest against Iona and wraps up the day with a 4:30 game versus Detroit.

Against the Titans, UNCW opened the scoring in the bottom of the second, taking advantage of a Titan error on a double steal attempt to plate two runs and build a 2-0 advantage.

Rowland increased the Seahawks advantage in the bottom of the third, helping her own cause with a RBI single to make it 3-0 before UNCW tallied three runs on a Detroit error and a two-run single by senior Lauryn Buckworth in the bottom of the fourth to build a 6-0 advantage.

Junior KC Shue closed out the scoring in the fifth, cracking a two-out double to left-center that plated two runs and evoked the eight-run mercy rule.

Rowland allowed just one hit, a single by Kayla Kostich in the first inning, and one walk in five innings while striking out seven to pick up the win in her season debut.

"Casey (Rowland) did an outstanding job in game one," said UNCW Head Coach Kristy Norton. "She came out mentally ready and that will be a key component for her this season."

Shue was 3-for-4 with two RBI to pace a Seahawks lineup that finished with nine hits versus the Titans as six players tallied one hit each.

"We had good plate performances from everyone in the lineup versus Detroit," said Norton. "Especially (Morgan) McCann in the leadoff spot; she set the tone right away."

Versus Nebraska-Omaha, the Mavericks jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning, using a leadoff home run from Mathewson and a UNCW error to build the early advantage.

The two teams traded runs in the third, with Nebraska-Omaha scoring a run on a fielder's choice to take a 3-0 lead in the top half of the frame only to see UNCW get on the board with a two-out single by Shue to make it 3-1.

A two-run home run by freshman Campbell Ditto in the top of the fourth pushed the Mavericks lead to 5-1 before UNCW plate another run in the bottom of the fifth as a single to third base by sophomore Morgan McCann would trim the Seahawks deficit to 5-2.

The Mavericks regain their four-run cushion in the top of the sixth, however, closing out the scoring on an infield single by senior Lindsay Redding.

Ditto was 2-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored to highlight a UNO lineup that recorded seven hits in the nightcap. Sophomore Kat Barrow was credited with the victory in the circle for the Mavericks, allowing two runs on seven hits and one walk. She struck out nine.

Sophomore Jessica Rappe was 2-for-2 with two runs scored for UNCW. Shue and McCann were both 1-for-3 with a RBI. Sophomore Jordan Schmidt was credited with the loss for UNCW, surrendering three runs (one earned) on three hits and four walks. She fanned three.

"We needed our defense to perform better against a very powerful offensive UNO team," said Norton. "Our girls had a lot of energy and I liked the effort they put forth today."
