WILMINGTON, North Carolina - The UNCW women's basketball team begins a busy stretch that will see the team take to the floor four times over the next eight days Sunday when it faces Old Dominion in a 3 p.m. matinee at the Ted Constant Center.

Sunday's game will be aired live as part of the Colonial Athletic Association's women's basketball television package. The game can be seen locally on WECT's secondary channel (Digital 6.2/Time Warner Cable 121) and as well as  the Comcast Sports Network and other various regional cable outlets.

Seahawk Storylines

• The Seahawks (2-16; 1-6 CAA) begin the hectic stretch looking to snap a losing skid that reached five games with a 63-61 setback to visiting William & Mary Thursday.
• Senior Karneshia Garrett posted her second straight double-double with 17 points and 12 rebounds, but the Seahawks were unable to overcome a Tribe lineup that owned a commanding 54-37 advantage on the glass and converted 23 offensive rebounds into 26 second-chance points.
• UNCW has struggled to rebound the basketball this season as it ranks 11th in the CAA and 312th in the NCAA in rebounding margin (-6.7). The Seahawks have been out-rebounded by their opponent in all but four of its 18 games this season and have been out-rebounded by an average of 11.0 boards per game during its current five-game losing skid.
• The Seahawks have made it hard for the opposition to make shots from the field this season as opponents are making just 38.6 percent (433-of-1123) of their tries from the field this season, representing the fifth-best field goal percentage defense in program history. Of UNCW's 18 opponents this season, only six (Liberty, NKU, North Carolina A&T, William & Mary, Drexel and ODU) have shot better than 40 percent from the field against UNCW.
• UNCW has struggled to shoot the basketball this season, ranking 10th in the CAA and 266th nationally in field goal percentage, making just 36.3 percent (350-of-995) of its attempts from the floor this season. The Seahawks have shot better than 40 percent from the floor in just five of 18 games this season, including three of their last six contests (William & Mary, Drexel and Towson).
• Senior forward Karneshia Garrett has been a force to be reckoned with on the glass this season as she enters Sunday's contest ranked 27th in the nation in rebounds per game (10.6). She has grabbed double-digit rebounds in nine of 17 games played this season, highlighted by a pair of 18-rebound performances at Wake Forest (Nov. 14) and against North Carolina Central (Nov. 28). She has pulled down double-digit boards in each of the past two games, grabbing 12 boards against both Towson and William & Mary.
• Garrett has also picked up her point production in recent games, averaging 13.4 points in the Seahawks' last five contests. Garrett is shooting 53.8 percent (28-of-52) from the field during that stretch as she has reached double figures in all five of those contests, highlighted by a 17-point effort against William & Mary on Thursday.
• Junior guard Jessica Freeman leads the team in scoring (10.4) and steals (2.3) and ranks third in assists (2.3). Freeman has served as an iron-woman of sorts for the Seahawks, having played all 40 minutes in eight games this season, including seven of the last nine contests. She ranks second in the league in minutes played per game (36.4).

Scouting Old Dominion

• Old Dominion (14-6; 5-3 CAA) enters Sunday's matchup looking to build off the momentum of a 53-50 triumph over visiting Drexel on Thursday.
• In a matchup of two of the top three defensive teams in the CAA, the Lady Monarchs were able to limit the Dragons to just 33.4 percent shooting, including a frosty 21.2 percent effort in the first half, as they held off a late Drexel rally to record the three-point victory.
• The Lady Monarchs have done a good job of shooting the basketball this season, ranking third in the league in field goal percentage (.411). ODU has also done a good job of keeping their opponents from making baskets as it enters Sunday's contest third in the league in defensive field goal percentage (.360).
• Senior guard Jackie Cook paces the Lady Monarch attack, ranking eighth in the CAA in points per game (13.8). Cook, ranks among the league leaders in field goal (.439/11th), 3-point field goal (.338/11th) and free-throw percentage (.797/5th), scored 11 points and added six rebounds in the first meeting between the two programs.
• Sophomore Shae Kelly is second on the team in scoring (12.9) and leads the team in both rebounding (8.9) and steals (2.5). Kelly has been a force on the glass in recent contests, grabbing double-digit rebounds in five of the last six games, including 10 caroms in the first matchup between the two programs.
• 2011-12 CAA Rookie-of-the-Year Ashley Betz-White leads the team in assists (2.6) and ranks 11th in the league in steals (1.9). Betz-White dished out a season-best nine assists in the victory over the Dragons Thursday.
• Karen Barefoot is in her second season as Head Coach of the Lady Monarchs. The former ODU assistant has posted a 25-27 mark in her first 52 games back in the Tidewater region.

Series Notes Versus Old Dominion

• Thursday's contest marks the 46th meeting between UNCW and Old Dominion. The Lady Monarchs won the first meeting between the two programs, 74-50, on Jan. 17 at Trask Coliseum.
• The Lady Monarchs have dominated the series since its inception, winning all but one of the previous 45 meetings between the two schools since joining the CAA in 1991-92.
• The Seahawks are 1-21 in 22 previous trips to Norfolk to play the Lady Monarchs. UNCW picked up its only victory in the series in the most recent visit to the region, posting a 76-54 win at the Ted Constant Convocation Center on Jan. 22, 2012.

William & Mary Recap

UNCW saw its losing streak reach five games with a 63-61 setback versus William & Mary Thursday at Trask Coliseum. 

• William & Mary led by 12 with six minutes remaining in the second half, only to see UNCW battle back and make it a one-point game with 37 seconds remaining. The Tribe missed their shot on the next possession, but were able to get the rebound and make one of two free throws to record the two-point victory.
• The Tribe avenged a nine-point loss to the Seahawks on Jan. 8 in Williamsburg and ended an eight-game losing skid to the Seahawks to expand their lead in the all-time series to 31-29.
• Senior guard Taylor Hilton led three W&M players in double figures with 15 points. Senior forward Emily Correal added 12 points and senior guard Janine Aldridge netted 11.
• Junior Kaitlyn Mathieu pulled down 11 rebounds and senior Emily Correal added 10 as the Tribe enjoyed a commanding 54-37 advantage on the glass. William & Mary finished with 23 offensive rebounds and notched 26 second-chance points, both season-highs for a UNCW opponent.
• Senior forward Karneshia Garrett scored a game-high 17 points and grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds for her second straight double-double and her sixth of the season.
• Senior guard Tawanna Lee added 13 points, junior guard Jessica Freeman scored 12 and freshman guard Dana Brown finished with 11 as UNCW featured four in double digits for the first time this season.
• The two teams combined for just 24 turnovers (UNCW 11, William & Mary 13). The two sides teamed up for 47 miscues in their first meeting on Jan. 8.
• UNCW moved to 2-1 this season and 69-6 since the start of the 2007-08 season when holding a lead of 10 points or more in a contest. It is the first such loss for the Seahawks, who led by as many as 11 in the first half, since suffering a 63-54 setback to Eastern Michigan on March 21, 2011.
• The Seahawks held a lead at halftime for just the fourth time this season and moved to 1-3 when doing so. UNCW also moved to 68-20 since the start of the 2007-08 season when holding a lead at the break.
• The Seahawks held their opponent to below 40 percent shooting for the 12th time this season as the Tribe was 24-of-70 (.343) from the floor for the game.
• UNCW shot better than 33 percent from 3-point range for the fifth time this season as it made 8 of 21 tries from 3-point range. William & Mary was also solid from beyond the arc, making 8-of-22 (.364) from downtown.
• UNCW was out-rebounded for the 14th time this season and moved to 0-14 on the season when that occurs.

Half-Dollar Defense

The Seahawks are 53-0 since the start of the 2002-03 campaign when limiting the opposition to 50 points or less.

• UNCW held its first opponent to 50 points or less during the Adell Harris era with a 59-45 victory over North Carolina Central on Nov. 28. The win also marked the first time the Seahawks had limited its opposition to fewer than 50 points since a 76-47 victory at Towson on Feb. 24, 2011.
• The last time the Seahawks lost a game in which they held their opponent to less than 50 points was a 49-44 setback at rival Campbell on Nov. 17, 2001.

Interstate 70

UNCW is 69-8 (.896) since the start of the 2000-01 campaign when it scores 70 or more points in a contest.

• The Seahawks were 10-1 in 2011-12 and are 23-2 since the start of the 2010-11 season when reaching the 70-point plateau.
• UNCW's last loss when scoring 70 or more points came in a 79-73 setback to Appalachian State in the first round of the Postseason WNIT last March.

Getting Off To a Good Start important for UNCW

The Seahawks are 68-20 (.772) since the start of the 2007-08 season when leading at halftime.

• UNCW is 1-3 this season when holding a halftime advantage. All three of the Sehawks losses under such circumstances have come in games where their halftime advantage was three points or less (25-24 vs. Charlotte; 30-27 at Towson; 33-32 vs. William & Mary).
• On the flip side, the Seahawks are just 21-64 (.247) since 2007-08 when trailing at intermission. UNCW picked up its first win under such circumstances this season with its victory at William & Mary, overcoming a 23-22 halftime deficit to pick up the win.

Double-Digit Dominance

UNCW has benefitted from building big leads in recent years as it is a combined 69-6 (.920) since the start of the 2007-08 season when it holds a lead of 10 points or more during a contest.

• The Seahawks are 2-1 this season under such circumstances. UNCW suffered its first loss in a game when holding a double-digit lead when it suffered a 63-61 setback against William & Mary, a game that saw the Seahawks lead by as many as 11 in the 1st half.
• The Seahawks have struggled to overcome big deficits in that same timeframe, posting an 12-71 (.145) mark during games in which they have trailed by 10 points or more. Nine of those 12 victories, however, have come since the start of the 2010-11 season, including their 61-52 victory at William & Mary on Jan. 8 that saw the Seahawks erase a 14-point deficit in the second half on their way to victory.

Youth movement

According to research conducted by the athletic communications department at St. John's University, UNCW Head Coach Adell Harris is one of the youngest Division I head coaches in the country.

• Harris is the 10th youngest head coach in the nation based on birth date, having celebrated her 32nd birthday on May 1, just two days before accepting the head coaching position at UNCW.
• Harris is the youngest coach in the CAA, but not the youngest in the state of North Carolina. That honor goes to High Point Head Coach DeUnna Hendrix. The 28-year-old is in her first season as head coach of the Panthers.

Harris, McGowen Reunited

When UNCW Head Coach Adell Harris took over the Seahawks program last May, she was already familiar with one player on her new roster from her time at Tusculum College.

• Harris coached current UNCW senior Chelsea McGowen at Tusculum during the 2009-10 season.
• Together the duo combined to lead the Pioneers to a 23-10 overall record, the South Atlantic Conference Tournament championship and an appearance in the NCAA Elite Eight.
• McGowen averaged 2.1 points and 1.7 rebounds during her freshman season before transferring to Brunswick Community College for the 2011-12 campaign.

Freeman, Lee Making Their Way Up school's Three-Point Chart

Senior Tawanna Lee and redshirt junior Jessica Freeman are both making their way up the school's career three-point field goals made chart.

• Freeman currently sits tied for 7th place on the all-time list with 88 three-pointers made while Lee is in 12th place with 78 treys made.
• Freeman surpassed Katy Walters for 10th place on the school's career three-point field goals made list (79) with her three made trifectas in UNCW's game at Northern Kentucky on Dec. 20. Freeman enters today's game just one 3-pointer away from surpassing Jeri Lynn Coker for sole possession of seventh place on the all-time list.
• Lee, meanwhile, is just one 3-pointer away from equalling Katy Walters (79) for 11th place and four triples shy of matching Treasure Johnson for 10th place (83).
• Both players have been consistent from beyond the arc during their careers, with Lee sixth (.351) and Freeman 10th (.331) on the squad's chart for career three-point field goal percentage. Freeman led the league in three-point field goal percentage in 2011-12 (.414), while Lee ranks seventh on the circuit this season in that category (.384).

Hail To the Theif

Junior guard Jessica Freeman recently moved into the top 10 of the program's career steals chart.

• Freeman entered the program's career top 10 on Jan. 31, recording five steals against William & Mary to surpass Johnnie Smith for sole possession of 10th place on the school's all-time chart.
• Freeman enters today's contest with 165 career steals and needs just two thefts to catch Sahsha Taylor for ninth place on the all-time list (167).
• Thievery is nothing new for the Charlotte, N.C. native as Freeman ranked sixth in the league in steals in 2011-12 (2.2). She currently ranks fourth among all league players in that category (2.3).

Seahawks Tabbed Seventh, Garrett Preseason Honorable Mention

UNCW was picked to finish seventh overall during the upcoming 2012-13 season and senior forward Karneshia Garrett was a Honorable Mention Preseason All-CAA selection.

• The Seahawks and George Mason were selected to finish seventh in a vote of the league's 11 head coaches, ahead of Towson, William & Mary and Georgia State.
• Delaware was picked to repeat as regular-season champion while James Madison was tabbed to finish second. Hofstra was picked third, followed by Drexel, Old Dominion, Northeastern, UNCW and George Mason (tie), Towson and William & Mary (tie) and Georgia State.
• Garrett earned Honorable Mention Preseason All-CAA accolades after appearing in 32 games and making 21 starts during her first season with the program in 2011-12. She averaged 9.8 points and 7.5 rebounds while pacing the team with six double-doubles.

Seahawks Announce Signing Class

UNCW head women's basketball coach Adell Harris announced the signing of D'Asia Cain (Smynra, Ga./Campbell), Ryan Flowers (Raleigh, N.C./Millbrook) and Johanna McMillan (Mullica Hill, N.J./Sanford) to National Letters-of-Intent during the early signing period.

• D'Asia Cain averaged 7.0 points, 6.0 rebounds, and 4.0 assists per game during her junior season in helping lead Campbell to a regional championship and State Final Four appearance. She was Named MVP of the Campbell Holiday Classic last season.
• Ryan Flowers Led Millbrook to the 2011-12 Class 4A state championship, earning Most Outstanding Player accolades during the championship game. She averaged 14.0 points and 10.0 rebounds per game during junior season and is a Two-time All-Capital 8 selection. Flowers led the Wildcats to Class 4A state runner-up finish as a sophomore and was a 2011 Regional All-Tournament Team selection.
• Johanna McMillan is ranked as a top 100 prospect for her position by ESPN.com. She was an Honorable Mention All-State selection following a junior season that saw her average 11.3 points, 3.6 rebounds, 1.8 assists and 1.5 steals per game. a Two-time All-Conference selection (First-team 2011-12 and Second-Team 2010-11) she has led Sanford to back-to-back DIAA State Championships (2010 & 11) and a runner-up finish in the 2012 championship. She has also helped the Warriors capture three straight D.I.S.C. titles.
