WILMINGTON, North Carolina - Redshirt freshman Craig Ponder has been named the Colonial Athletic Association's Men's Basketball Rookie-of-the-Week following his career-high performance in UNCW's 61-58 loss at Marshall over the weekend.
Ponder, a 6-1, 185-pound point guard from Bluefield, W.Va., enjoyed a successful return to his home state Saturday night by pouring in 26 points - three more than his total for the previous six games of the season - on 11-of-16 shooting from the field. He also added two rebounds, two assists and two steals in the narrow loss to the Thundering Herd.
"Craig has been improving every day and we're pleased that he's been recognized by the conference," said third-year UNCW Head Coach Buzz Peterson. "We've seen his improvement in practice and knew he was capable. Hopefully, this will give him the confidence to continue to be a sparkplug for this team."
Ponder scored 13 points in each half and the Seahawks took a late lead over the Herd before Marshall rallied in the closing seconds. Ponder was the only UNCW player in double digits on the night.
The Seahawks, 3-4, return to the court Wednesday with an 8 p.m. tip-off against NCAA Division II Coker at Trask Coliseum.
