WILMINGTON, North Carolina
- Senior Karneshia Garrett scored 10 points and added 11 rebounds to record a
double-double and lead UNCW to a 52-38 victory over UNC Pembroke in women's
basketball exhibition action Saturday at Trask Coliseum.
The Seahawks,
who extended their exhibition winning streak to seven games with the 14-point
victory over the Braves, open the 2012 regular season Nov. 9 with a 7 p.m.
contest at No. 22 West Virginia. The Braves open their regular season Nov. 10

Garrett was the only UNCW player to reach double figures as
fellow senior Chelsea McGowen tallied nine points while juniors Brittany Gamby
and Jessica Freeman and sophomore Kelva Atkins chipped in eight points apiece
in a balanced effort. McGowen pulled down a game-high 12 rebounds to join
Garrett in double figures as UNCW posted a 50-43 advantage on the glass. Freeman
finished with a game-high nine steals and added five assists and five rebounds
in an all-around effort.
Senior Amelia Partin notched seven points to lead UNCP, who
was limited to a just 13-of-54 shooting (.241) for the contest. Sophomore
Jasmine Kemp grabbed eight rebounds for the Braves while senior Courtney Bolton
added seven.
UNCW never trailed in the contest, scoring the first five
points of the game before using a 13-4 spurt midway through the frame to build
a 20-8 advantage. UNCP would cut the deficit to six in the final minutes of the
first half, scoring six unanswered points over a three-minute stretch, before a
transition layup by Atkins with 20 seconds remaining would give the Seahawk a 26-18
lead at the break.
The Braves continue to cut into the Seahawks lead early in the
second half, scoring eight of the first 10 points of the frame to make it a 28-26
contest.
UNCW would once again take control of the contest, rattling
off eight unanswered points to end the Braves run and regain a double-digit
cushion, 36-26, with 12:01 remaining. UNCP attempted to rally, but was unable
to get any closer than eight points the rest of the way as the Seahawk took
advantage of a 6-0 in the closing minutes to build a 16-point edge and cruise
to the 14-point victory.
