WILMINGTON, North
Carolina - Christian Wolfe's one-out, bases-loaded single in the bottom of
the ninth lifted Blue to an 8-7 win over Teal in game five of the Blue-Teal
World Series on Friday at Brooks Field.
Blue has now won all five games played in the series,
although this was the first one decided in its last at bat.
The Wolfe's game-winning hit answered Teal's three-run
explosion in the top of the ninth that tied the game at 7-all.
Sophomore reliever Ryan Mayhew (1-0) earned the win while
junior Christian MacDonald (0-1) was saddled with the loss in relief.
Blue raced out to a 6-0 lead after six innings behind the
stellar pitching of junior Mat Batts and a pair of home runs off the bat of
senior Hunter Ridge.
Batts struck out seven and allowed just three hits over six
shutout innings while Ridge delivered a two-run blast to left in the first and
a solo shot to right to lead off the seventh.
In the ninth, Freshman Alex Pernick began Teal's rally with
a two-out single off Mayhew, who had posted saves in three of the first four
games. Freshman Steven Linkous followed with and single and senior Matt Keeler
plated the first run with a single to center. One batter later, junior Ryan
LaGrange tripled in two run to tie the game.
In the bottom of the frame, freshman Nick Monroe walked with
one out and junior Kelly Secrest pinch ran for him. Senior Tyler Molinaro
dumped a single into left center and Secrest would move around to third when
the throw behind him to second sailed wide of the mark. With runners at second
and third, junior Josh Abshire was walked setting the stage for Wolfe, who
lined a single on the first pitch he saw to end the game.
Linkous, LaGrange, freshman Andy Austin and Pernick each had
two hits to fuel Teal, which out hit Blue, 12-10. Teal battered the Blue
relievers for seven runs on nine hits over the final three innings.
Joining Ridge with two-hit afternoons were senior Michael
Bass, Molinaro and Wolfe.
