WILMINGTON, North Carolina - No. 16 Oklahoma State carded a 292 total to build a one-shot lead as the 11th Landfall Tradition women's golf tournament opened Friday at the Country Club of Landfall's scenic Jack Nicklaus Course.

Playing in unseasonably warm and breezy conditions on the par 72, 6,138-yard layout, the Cowgirls posted a four-over-par total on the opening 18 holes to claim the top spot by one shot over No. 5 Duke (293). Defending champion and No. 22 Purdue (294) and Texas Tech (294) are two strokes back of Oklahoma State while No. 24 Notre Dame (296) stands fifth and No. 14 Michigan State (297) occupies sixth. Three teams, including host UNCW, are part of a tie for seventh at eight-over-par.

Texas Tech senior Kimberly Kaufmann carded a five-under-par 67 to match the tournament record for the lowest individual opening round and build a two-shot lead over Oklahoma State's Kelsey Vines (69). The round equaled the round shot by Tennessee's Marci Turner in 2004.

Kaufmann's round represented one of 11 sub-par totals fired during Friday's play.

UNCW freshman Johanna Bjoerk (70) and Notre Dame rookie Lindsay Weaver (70) are three shots off the lead in a tie for third at 2-under while a logjam of six players, including Seahawk junior Lori Beth Adams (71), are tied for fifth at 1-under.

South Carolina junior Samantha Swinehart turned in one of the highlights of the day when she aced the Par 3, 145-yard 15th hole.

The 54-hole, five-count-four event resumes Saturday at 8:30 a.m. with second round action. With severe weather scheduled to impact the area on Saturday, visit UNCWsports.com for updates.
