ATLANTA, Georgia -
Valtteri Halonen and Sawyer Dove each won two events to lead UNCW's men's
swimming and diving team to a 160-131 win over host Emory on Saturday at the Woodruff Physical Education Center. The
Seahawk women dropped their meet to the reigning NCAA Division III national
champions, 193-102.
With the win, the
Seahawk men improve to 2-1 on the young season while the women dropped to 0-4.
It was the season opener for both Emory squads.
Halonen, a sophomore,
won both backstroke events, taking the 100 with a time of 50.78 seconds and the
200 in a time of 1:50.74. He also swam the opening leg of UNCW's winning 200
Medley Relay (1:32.94).
Dove, a freshman, gave
the Seahawks first-place showings in the distance events. He posted a time of
9:54.57 in the 1,000 meters and later fashioned a time of 4:47.84 in the 500.
On the women's side,
senior Carly Tanner took first in the 100 Breaststroke (1:04.48) and freshman
Jensen Engen won the 200 Breaststroke (2:22.36).
Other winners for the
Seahawks were Gabe Thran (200 Free), Joe Gallene (50 Free), Michael Williams
(100 Free) and Stephen Conrad (100 Fly).
In diving, sophomore
Chase Seymour (237-37) edged teammate Nate Sherron (233.77), a senior, in the
3-meter board for first place.
The Seahawks visit Duke
on Oct. 27 for a trio of dual meets against ACC foes Virginia Tech, Florida
State and host Duke. The meet begins at 2 p.m.
