JONESBOROUGH,
Tennessee - UNCW combined for a low-round seven-under-par 281 to finish
third overall and junior Payne McLeod posted his second straight top-5 finish
on Sunday at the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate at the Blackthorn Club.
The Seahawks (289-289-281=859) finished two strokes off the
pace behind champion, 12th-ranked Missouri (285-286-286=857) and one off
second-place and 31st ranked Tennessee (280-287-291=858).
'We always talk about winning that final round and today we
did," said UNCW Head Coach Matt Clark. "It was fun to see all five guys in the
mix and making big shots. It's been a long 10 days, but to come away with
second and third-place finishes against some of the best competition in this
region is great for a school from the Colonial Athletic Association."
The tournament field included five top-40 programs and eight
players were ranked in the top 100.
McLeod (71-73-67=211), who tied for second earlier in the
week at the Gridiron Classic in South Bend, Ind., aided the Seahawk surge in
the final round, as UNCW moved from eighth to finish third. McLeod carded a
career-low 67 in the third round and climbed 12 spots on the leaderboard.
"Payne was his usual consistent self, but today made a
mature decision that allowed him to really take off and make a run." McLeod
settled for a par on the eighth hole and proceeded to four birdies on the
remaining 10 holes.
Grant Milner 967-67-72=206) of Memphis earned medalist
honors finishing 10-under-par for the tournament.
Senior Thomas Bass (71-72-72=215) tied for 11th after
recording his second straight round of even-par golf on Sunday. Bass has now
finished 11th or better in each of his last three tournaments.
Freshman Jens Geweke (72-73-71=216) finished off his best
tournament outing of the fall with a one-under-par 71. All three of Geweke's
rounds counted for UNCW, which posted its lowest tournament stroke total (859)
since the GolfWeek Program Challenge (843) to open the 2011-12 season.
