WILMINGTON, North Carolina - From a first-ever 5K Run to the traditional slam dunk and 3-pont shooting contests, basketball season arrived at UNCW Friday with the conclusion of Midnite Madness festivities.
A crowd estimated at more than 2,000 fans gathered from 9:30-11 p.m. to meet the new teams of Coach Buzz Peterson and Coach Adell Harris. The fun-filled night capped a full week on campus that included an ice cream social, various games, Sammy C. Hawk sightings and other activities.
Friday's festivities began a 5K Run in the front of Trask Coliseum and continued with the annual Trask Trek when students and fans met at The Seahawk Village clubhouse for the short walk to Trask Coliseum. A total of 173 runners and walkers participated in the first Midnite Madness 5K Run.
Midnite Madness convened at 9:30 p.m. and included performances by Sammy C. Hawk, Physical Graffeeti and UNCW's cheerleaders, dance team and pep band. Students participated in several contests for prizes.
In Friday's contests between the teams, junior guard Chris Dixon defeated junior guard Diana Venezia for the 3-point crown and senior forward Keith Rendleman topped defending champion Freddie Jackson for the dunk title.
Both teams will play an exhibition game on Saturday, Nov. 3. The men will take on North Carolina Wesleyan at 2 p.m., while the women play UNC Pembroke at 4:30 p.m.
