GREENVILLE, North Carolina - The UNCW women's golf team carded a team total 295 and holds a share of the lead after 18 holes of the Lady Pirate Intercollegiate Monday at the Greenville Country Club.
The Seahawks posted their seven-over-par total under wet and windy conditions to earn a share of the lead with Atlantic Coast Conference member Maryland (295) after the opening 18 holes. Old Dominion (301) is six shots back of the Seahawks and Terrapins in third while Elon (302) is in fourth.
"I was very pleased with how we played today," said UNCW Head Coach Cindy Ho. "Scoring was difficult today in the rain, wind and cold, but we finally got a solid 4th score to post our best round of the fall so far. Lori Beth (Adams) got off to a great start, getting herself to four-under-par through 13 holes. Johanna (Bjoerk) also played well, holding it together and then finished strong with three birdies over the last four holes. We had a solid round from everyone today and because of that we've put ourselves in a great position to see if we can win a tournament tomorrow."
Junior Lori Beth Adams carded a one-under-par 71 and sits in third place after the opening 18 holes while freshman Johanna Bjoerk is one shot back of Adams in an eight-way tie for fourth at even par. Juniors Laverry Kumar and Jeanne Metivier both carded four-over-par 76's on Monday to earn a share of 24th. Senior Danielle Lamy (88/T-100th) completed UNCW's entry while sophomore Mallory Warrick (86/T-95th) is competing as an individual entry.
Maryland's Juliet Vongphoumy holds a two-stroke lead over the field with a four-under-par 68. Boston College's Cristina McQuiston is in second place after carding a two-under-par 70 on Monday.
The two-day, 54-hole event was reduced to just 36 holes after second-round action was washed out Monday afternoon. After two hours of action, play was halted for 90 minutes due to lightning in the area during intermediate showers. When the golfers resumed play and finished first round action, heavier rains entered the area and play was halted for good around 4 p.m., leaving officials to cancel second round play all together.
The final round of the Lady Pirate Intercollegiate is scheduled to begin Tuesday with a shotgun start slated for 8:30 a.m.
