WILMINGTON, North
Carolina - Redshirt junior Tori Sewell drove in the only run of the game in
the bottom of the eighth to lead Team Navy to a 1-0 victory over Team Teal in
the inaugural Seahawk Clash Friday at Boseman Field.
The best-of-three split-squad series is now tied at one
game apiece. Game three is slated for an 11 a.m. start Saturday at Boseman
Field. An alumni game will follow at 1 p.m. Fans are encouraged to attend both
games.
In a classic pitcher's duel that saw both teams held off
the scoreboard during the first seven innings of the contest, Sewell proved to
be clutch in the bottom of the eighth as she flared a two-strike pitch to
center field with the bases loaded to push across the winning run for Team Navy.
Team Teal nearly broke the scoreless deadlock in the top
of the eighth. Redshirt sophomore Jordyn Schmidt, the starting pitcher for Team
teal, started the inning at second base and stole third on an errant throw by Team
Navy. Schmidt attempted to score on the play, but a perfect throw by freshman left
fielder Taylor Matkins silenced the crowd as Schmidt was tagged out at the plate.
Junior Alison Ruppe picked up the victory in the circle for
Team Navy, reliving freshman starter Kayla Pine as the duo combined to hurl
eight shutout innings. Schmidt was the tough-luck loser for Team Teal, allowing
just the one run in more than seven innings of work.
