GOLF, Illinois - UNCW combined for a team total 617 and sits in 15th place after the first two rounds of the Windy City Collegiate Classic Monday at the Glen View Golf Club.
The Seahawks are three shots back of 14th-place Kent State (303-311=614) and only 14 shots off the pace of No. 32 Ohio State, who holds 11th place with a 603 (300-303) team scorecard.
"Overall, I was pleased with how we played," said UNCW Head Coach Cindy Ho. "Lori Beth and Johanna played really solid rounds in the morning. The Glen View Golf Club is a great golf course with extreme slopes and quick greens. Both Lori Beth and Johanna handled those challenges really well and were able to post low scores in the morning because of it."
No. 2 Washington holds a two-stroke lead over the field after posting a team total 580 (287-293) on Monday. No. 6 Arizona is second with a 36-hole total of 582 (293-289) while No. 22 Iowa State sits six strokes back of the Huskies with a 586 (296-290) tournament scorecard.
Junior Lori Beth Adams (73-77) and freshman Johanna Bjoerk (74-76) are part of a seven-way tie for 31st at six-over-par 150. Junior Laverry Kumar (78-75) is three shots off the pace of Adams and Bjoerk as she is tied for 46th with a 36-hole total of 153. Junior Jeanne Metivier (84-80=164/78th) and sophomore Mallory Warrick (84-83=167/80th) rounded out the Seahawks entry.
"In the afternoon, Jeanne and Mallory played much better," said Ho. "They were able to put together a solid opening 14 holes in the second round before having a couple of tough holes at the end. I am proud of them for hanging in there, but we have to learn to finish those types of rounds in order to be successful."
Notre Dame's Lindsey Weaver (70-71) and UC Davis' Amy Simanton (73-68) are tied for the individual lead at three-under-par 141. Arizona's Manon Gidali (72-71) and Iowa State's Punpaka Phuntumabamrung (75-68) are two shots off the lead in a tie for third at one-under.
Final round action in the Windy City Collegiate Classic begins Tuesday with a shotgun start at 7:30 CST.
"We are not far from the pack heading into the final round," said Ho. "This is a solid tournament with many of the top teams in the nation. We just need to go out tomorrow and focus on putting together a solid round of golf."
