|Ritchie, Kharkevitch Claim Doubles Title|
BLACKSBURG, Virginia - Sophomore Alyssa Ritchie and freshman Christine Kharkevitch of UNCW combined to win the Flight B doubles championship at the 19th Annual Hokie Fall Women's Tennis Invitational Sunday at Virginia Tech's Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center.
Playing early Sunday, Ritchie and Kharkevitch breezed past Liberty's Jessie Boda and Brittany Yang, 8-2, to highlight UNCW's results on the final day of the three-day event.
The Seahawks were denied bids for championships in two singles finals by players from Armstrong Atlantic. AAU's Marlen Hacke topped Ritchie, 6-2, 6-1, in the title match of Flight B singles and Hacke's teammate, Clara Perez, topped Kelly Cameron, 6-1, 6-3, in the Flight C championship.
"We had a real tough time closing out matches today," said Evan Clark, UNCW's first-year head coach. "We came out with good starts, but were unable to finish matches off. We will learn from our experiences this weekend and get back to work on the practice court next week.
"I am very proud of Alyssa and Christine for winning the doubles championship in their flight. They played consistently at a high level all weekend and were rewarded for it."
In other matches played Sunday, junior Angie Sekely crushed Alexandra Sheeran of Liberty, 6-1, 6-1, for fifth place in Flight A singles, while Cameron partnered with Hales to down Virginia Tech's Carol Kahoun and Tea Ivanovic for ninth place in Flight A doubles.
The Seahawks continue their fall slate Oct. 18-20 when they compete in the ITA Regionals in Winston-Salem, N.C.
