WILMINGTON, North Carolina - Second half goals from Stephanie Bronson and Maddie McCormick sparked UNCW to a 2-0 win over visiting Drexel in Colonial Athletic Association women's soccer action Friday at the UNCW Soccer Stadium.
The Seahawks improved to 7-4-1 overall with the shutout win and to 2-1 in the CAA. Drexel, who entered the match unbeaten in conference play, saw its record dip to 7-2-2 overall and 1-1-1 in the league.
Both side battled to a stalemate for the first 50 minutes of the match, but Bronson notched her first goal of the season, coming in the 51st minute when she chipped in a shot from 16 yards out on the leftside. Amanda Holmes started the play with a sharp cross from the right side that found an unmarked Bronson.
McCormick, who led UNCW with six shots, including three on target, gave the Seahawks some breathing room in the 85th minute when she punched home her own rebound off the post for her second goal of the season. McCormick settled a loose ball in the penalty area and curled a shot to the back post. That shot caromed off the woodwork to the front of the goal where she knocked it through a crowd in front.
Prior to McCormick's strike, Drexel had been pushing for the equalizer, but UNCW goalkeeper Caitlin Hunter kept the Dragons at bay for her fourth clean sheet. In the 78th minute, Hunter snared a header by DU's Civanni Moss to keep it a 1-0 Seahawk advantage.
Hunter finished with six saves on the night while the Seahawks held a 15-12 advantage in shots.
DU goalkeeper Eve Badana made four saves on the evening.
The Seahawks close out their weekend action on Sunday with a 1 p.m. start against visiting Delaware.
