WILMINGTON, North Carolina - UNCW junior Laverry Kumar was named the Colonial Athletic Association's Women's Golfer-of-the-Week on Wednesday following her top-five finish in the Terrier Intercollegiate earlier in the week.
"Laverry had an excellent tournament to start the year and is deserving of this honor," said UNCW Head Coach Cindy ho. "She was consistent off the tee and her short game was very strong. I believe she led the tournament field in par scoring. I am really proud how she stayed focused for two days as she played incredibly well on a hilly course considering she had trouble walking and was in quite a bit of pain due to a swollen ankle caused by an injury suffered just before we left for Spartanburg."
A native of New Delhi, India, Kumar finished tied for fourth in the season-opening event with a 36-hole score of two-over-par 146 (72-74) as she helped the Seahawks to a third-place finish in the 13-team event.
Kumar opened the tournament with an even par 72 on Monday to post the seventh round of par or lower in her career. She followed that performance with a two-over 74 in the final round Tuesday to claim her second top five and seventh top ten result of her career.
UNCW returns to action Sept. 17-18 in the Louisville Cardinal Cup at the Cardinal Club Golf Course in Louisville, Ky.
