Seahawks Off To Strong Start On Courts

WILMINGTON, North Carolina - The UNCW men's and women's tennis teams went a combined 17-4 in matches Friday on the opening day of the UNCW-Landfall Invitational at the Country Club of Landfall's Tennis Center.

The men's team, which advanced to the NCAA Regionals last spring, compiled a 4-0 record in singles and an 8-1 mark in doubles play.

"I was very pleased with our performance for the first day of the fall schedule," said sixth-year head men's coach Mait DuBois. "Our doubles was especially strong and we have three teams in the finals of their draws.

"The weather held us back a little bit with getting through all of our matches, but we are way ahead of where we were at this point last year. I hope we can continue this momentum into day two of the tournament."

UNCW's top doubles team of seniors Chris Cooprider and Kosta Blank won two matches and will play in the finals of the Flight A Doubles draw at 8:30 a.m. Saturday.

The Seahawk women, making their debut under new coach Evan Clark, went 1-1 in singles and 4-2 in doubles play. The leading doubles tandem of Olga Blank and Angie Sekely also reached the finals of the Flight A Doubles and will play at 8:30 a.m. as well.
