CAA Player of the Week Nominee
Mateo Cardona
(Sophomore, midfielder, Cali, Colombia/Colegia Britanico)
- Scored twice as the Seahawks went 1-1 in a pair of road
matches. Cardona scored in the second half against Campbell and then scored 41
seconds into overtime to lift UNCW to a 1-0 win at Appalachian State. It was
Cardona's first career game-winner and his third career goal total. The win
gave UNCW it's first road win of the season and first since 2010 when they
edged George Mason in the season finale.
CAA Rookie of the Week Nominee
Brad Newman (Junior,
Raleigh, N.C./Millbrook)
- Made his first two
career starts and allowed two goals in 180:41. Newman made three saves in each
game and has a 1.00 goals against average on the young season.
Notes: The
Seahawks dropped a 2-1 decision at Campbell on Wednesday before rebounding on
Sunday for a 1-0 win over Appalachian State ... Mateo Cardona needed just 41
seconds to make the Seahawks victors against ASU ... Junior Michael Parrish
assisted on both Cardona goals this week ... The Seahawks dropped to 20-26-1
all-time against Campbell, a series that has been played every season since
1969 ... The Seahawks head to Greenville, S.C., this week for the Diadora/Sphinx
Invitational, hosted by nationally-ranked Furman ... UNCW takes on the host
Paladins on Friday and Coll. Of Charleston on Sunday ... The Seahawks have already
faced a pair of Southern Conference schools in UNC Greensboro (2-2 tie) and
App. State.
