CHARLOTTESVILLE,
Virginia - Senior keeper Caitlin Hunter recorded a career-high 13 saves,
but No. 8 Virginia scored twice in the second half to defeat UNCW, 2-0, in collegiate
women's soccer action Sunday at Klöckner Stadium.
The Cavaliers improved to 3-1 on the young season as they
recorded their third straight shutout victory. The Seahawks, who faced their
third straight nationally-ranked opponent, moved to 0-2-1 on the campaign.
"What a tremendous environment for a college soccer
game," said UNCW Head Coach Paul Cairney. "Virginia moves the ball very well
and is dangerous on the attack. We weathered several good attacks and our whole
team did a fantastic job defensively today. I am very proud of our team and
their effort. Our kids are tough; they are fit and they never quit. They find
ways to stay in the game and they showed that determination again today."
Following a scoreless first half, freshman Makenzy Doniak got
Virginia on the board at the 55:37 mark as she converted a cross from junior
Molly Menchel for her team-leading fifth goal of the season.
The Seahawks had a chance to tie the game moments after the
Doniak tally, but freshman Morgan Leyble found the post with her shot attempt
in the 63rd minute.
"Down 1-0, we hit the post on a great shot by (Morgan)
Leyble," said Cairney. "If that goes in, we are right back in the game."
Sophomore Danielle Colaprico doubled the Cavaliers advantage
to 2-0 in the 72nd minute as she buried a blast from the top of the box for her
second goal of the campaign.
The Cavaliers enjoyed a 27-2 shot advantage in the contest,
highlighted by a 15-1 edge in the second half. Junior Danielle DeLisle and sophomore
Churchill O'Connell combined to record the shutout for Virginia as they
combined to make one save.
Both teams return to action Aug. 31. UNCW opens the home
portion of its 2012 schedule with a 7 p.m. contest against state rival
Charlotte at the UNCW Soccer Stadium. Virginia, meanwhile, heads to the Lone
Star State for an 8:30 matchup with host Texas in the Longhorn Invitational.
"We must put this game behind us and now turn
our focus this week to a very good Charlotte team," said Cairney.
