Rose Strikes Twice In Win Over Tar Heels

WILMINGTON, North Carolina - Senior forward Stephanie Rose converted a penalty kick opportunity in the 83rd minute to break a 1-all tie and lift UNCW to a 2-1 victory over visiting UNC Chapel Hill in a collegiate women's soccer exhibition contest Wednesday at the UNCW Soccer Stadium.

The Seahawks open the regular season Aug. 17 against No. 22 Virginia Tech at the Virginia Tech Tournament in Blacksburg, Va. The Tar Heels, ranked eighth in the NSCAA preseason poll, will wrap up exhibition competition Saturday with a 7 p.m. contest at Charlotte before beginning the regular season with an Aug. 17 contest at Portland.

Rose's decisive tally came in moments after the Jacksonville, N.C., product collected the ball just outside the right side of the 18-yard box and worked her way towards the middle of the field before being tackled by a UNC Chapel Hill defender just inside the top of the box. On the ensuing penalty kick attempt, Rose was able to beat the keeper with a shot into the lower left-hand corner of the net for the go-ahead goal.

Playing three 30-minute periods, the Tar Heels opened the scoring at the 25:45 mark of the contest as sophomore Bianca Gray put a ball into the box from the left-hand side of the endline that sophomore Caitlin Ball was able to head inside the right post for the game's opening tally.

UNCW was able to draw even in the 60th minute when sophomore Stephanie Bronson played a ball from near midfield that allowed Rose to get behind the Tar Heels defense, chip the ball past an oncoming Hannah Daly and into an open net to level the score at 1-all.

Senior Caitlin Hunter played all 90 minutes in goal for the Seahawks and finished with four saves. UNC Chapel Hill used four keepers for the contest. Senior Adelaide Gay was credited with the Tar Heels lone save in the contest.

UNC-CH held a 12-6 edge in shots and posted a 5-2 advantage in corner kicks taken.
