WILMINGTON, North
Carolina - UNCW head men's soccer coach Aidan Heaney has announced the Seahawks'
schedule for the 2012 season, on that has seven teams that played in the NCAA
tournament last fall, including St. Mary's (Calif.) who advanced to the
quarterfinals.
The 2012 docket will be a balanced one with the Seahawks
playing at the UNCW Soccer Stadium nine times and on the road nine times, with
one of those away contests being a neutral site game.
The Seahawks open Heaney's 12th season at the helm on August
24, hosting Southern Conference power UNC Greensboro. The Spartans reached the
SoCon title game before bowing to Elon.
UNCW visits longtime regional rival Campbell on Aug. 29.
The Seahawks will compete in a pair of in-season tournaments
including the Diadora/Spinx Furman Invitational on Sept. 7 & 9. NCAA
tournament and host Furman will be UNCW's first opponent in the tournament
before the Seahawks take on another SoCon member in the College of Charleston
on the final day.
The UNCW Soccer Stadium will play host to the UNCW Hilton
Garden Inn Classic on Sept. 14 & 16. Joining the Seahawks are Appalachian
State, Binghamton and St. Mary's. The Seahawks play SMC on the seventh and will
close out the weekend with Binghamton.
ACC power Duke will make the trek to the Stadium on Sept.
25, with the Blue Devils being the second of four NCAA tournament participants
to play at the UNCW Soccer Stadium.
UNCW's Colonial Athletic Association opener will be at
George Mason on Sept. 22. Other road games in CAA play are William & Mary,
Drexel, Northeastern and Delaware. Home games include Hofstra, James Madison,
Old Dominion, Georgia State and Towson.
The Seahawks will also host a pair of exhibition games with
NCAA finalist Charlotte and NC State on Aug. 14 and 18, respectively.
