WILLIAMSBURG,
Virginia - Michael Bass singled in Jake Koenig with the go-ahead run with
two out in the top of the ninth as UNCW clinched the regular season Colonial
Athletic Association title with a 5-4 win over William & Mary on Friday at
Plumeri Park.
The Seahawks won their first regular season title since 2008
with the win as their record improved to 31-19 overall and 21-5 in the league.
The Tribe, meanwhile, dropped their fourth straight outing, all in conference
play, and dropped to 28-22 and 11-15 in the CAA.
With two outs in the ninth, Koenig doubled to left center
and would score two batters later as Bass ripped a single into center off
losing pitcher John Farrell (2-2). Farrell had pitched well in relief, allowing
just that one run on two hits and six strikeouts in four innings of relief.
Kelly Secrest (3-2) topped Farrell with three innings of
two-hit shutout relief.
Koenig finished with two hits on the evening as the Seahawks
held a 9-5 advantage in the hit column. Hunter Ridge also added two hits while
Tyler Molinaro belted his league-leading 13 homer of the season to give UNCW a
1-0 lead in the top of the first.
Trailing 2-1 in the fifth, W&M's Michael Katz slammed a
three-run homer off UNCW starter Mat Batts to give the Tribe a 4-2 lead. All
three runs were unearned following a Seahawk error.
That lead would be short lived as UNCW drew even with a pair
of runs off W&M starter Cole Shain in the top of the sixth.
Katz was the only hitter in the lineup with two hits for the
Tribe.
Batts pitched in and out of trouble for most of the night,
going six innings and allowing four runs, just one earned. He walked two and
struck out five.
Shain last five innings, surrendering four runs, two earned,
on seven hits and two walks.
Drew Farber knocked in two runs for the Seahawks, who improved
to 6-4 in one-run games.
The series concludes on Saturday with a 2 p.m. start at
Plumeri Park.
