WILMINGTON, North
Carolina - Following a performance that saw her hold regular-season
champion Hofstra without a hit for eight innings, UNCW freshman pitcher Casey Rowland was named the Colonial Athletic Association's Rookie-of-the-Week on
Monday.
Rowland becomes the second Seahawk rookie to earn the honor
this season, joining fellow newcomer Jordan Critcher, who was recognized on
March 6.
"We are happy to hear that Casey was recognized as CAA
Rookie-of-the-Week for her performance against Hofstra last weekend," said UNCW
Head Coach Kelly Van Houten. "She had a very strong finish to her rookie season
and we are confident that she will continue to develop as her career continues."
In her final appearance of the 2012 season, Rowland held the
Pride without a hit for the first eight innings of the contest before Hofstra
was able to break through with two hits and the decisive run in the bottom of
the ninth for a 1-0 victory.
The Albany, N.Y. product fanned 10 batters and issued just
two walks against the Pride as she recorded double-figure strikeouts for the
second time in four outings. Rowland ended her freshman season in third place
on the program's single-season strikeout list; fanning 139 batters in her
inaugural season in the Port City.
