WILMINGTON, North
Carolina - Mike Trionfo and a pair of Towson relievers combined to allow
just one run on five hits as the Tigers held off UNCW, 3-1, on Friday in a
Colonial Athletic Association series opener at Brooks Field.
The Tigers improved to 21-25 overall and evened their
conference mark at 11-11. The Seahawks saw their record dip to 27-18 and 17-5.
Trionfo (7-3) held the Seahawks to an unearned run on four
hits in five innings of work. He finished with a walk and four strikeouts.
Reliever Chris Acker shut down the Seahawks for 3 1/3 innings, allowing just
one hit and three walks while striking out two. Tyler Auston struck out both
batters he faced with runners on second and third in the ninth for his fourth
save.
Towson plated a run in the second for the early lead when
Peter Bowles scored on the front end of a double steal with Zach Fisher
stealing second. Fisher led the Towson lineup with two hits.
Andrew Parker pushed the lead to 2-0 with a sacrifice fly to
right off losing pitcher Tyler McSwain (7-3).
McSwain pitched well, allowing three runs, two earned, on
seven hits and a walk in eight innings. He finished with eight strikeouts.
The Seahawks had opportunities to break through, but
struggled going 1-for-10 in RBI opportunities and 2-for-9 with two out. Thomas Pope had UNCW's only RBI of the night with a two-out double in the fourth.
Ben Winter added a RBI triple in the eighth off McSwain to
complete the scoring.
Pope and Andrew Cain both had two hits for the Seahawks.
The series continues on Saturday with a noon start. The game
was originally slated for 2 p.m., but storms are forecasted for later in the
afternoon.
