WILMINGTON, North Carolina - Tony Porter, an internationally renowned educator and lecturer on the topic of sexual assault and violence against women, will address all area coaches Sunday when he presents "A Call To Coaches" at Trask Coliseum.

The event, free to the public but limited to individuals 17-over, is scheduled from 5-7:30 p.m. Porter's talk is being sponsored by UNCW Athletics, Wilmington's Domestic Violence Shelter and Verizon's Hopeline.

Porter works with the National Football League, National Basketball Association and many colleges and universities around the country through lectures and training, challenging men to reevaluate their presumptions and take responsibility for accommodating and contributing to a culture of violence against women. He has spoken at both the U.S. Naval Academy and U.S. Military Academy.

The charismatic speaker raises awareness of male responsibility in non-violent and healthy relationships, helping coaches recognize, accept and impose their unique position to influence young men's attitudes and behaviors. "A coach is a man's man. When coaches speak, men listen," Porter says.

"A Call to Coaches" is intended to help coaches at all levels learn how to use their voice as a platform to better shape the way boys and young men view and behave with women. All coaches from church and faith-based leagues, community and recreational teams, after school programs, middle and high school teams, as well as community college and university teams are invited

"Well-meaning men are generally unaware how their everyday attitudes, beliefs and language create a culture that empowers men -- at a great cost to women," said Rick Houston, prevention specialist with Wilmington's Domestic Violence Shelter and Services.  "While they don't personally perpetrate violence against women and girls, many accommodate and accept male domination in small ways every day and in so doing, support a culture in which unhealthy relationships and violence against women thrive."
