WILMINGTON, North Carolina - Led by Keith Rendleman's 19 points, UNCW, who placed four in double digit scoring, outpaced Hofstra, 86-80, in Colonial Athletic Association men's basketball action Saturday in Trask Coliseum.
The Seahawks, who extended their winning streak to four games, evened their record at 7-7 and moved to 3-1 in conference play for the first time since the 2005-06 season. The Pride fell to 6-10 on the year and remained winless at 0-4 in the CAA.
Hofstra was paced by its three seniors, with Nathaniel Lester leading the way with a double-double of 23 points and 12 rebounds. Mike Moore, the CAA's leading scorer, poured in 22 points and Dwan McMillan added 11.
Despite totaling a season-high 44 points in the first stanza, UNCW was unable to shake Hofstra, and found itself only up by five, 48-43, with 16:27 to go in the contest. But the Seahawks rattled off an 11-0 spurt, keyed by Rendleman with six points, to break the game open, 59-43, with 13:08 left in regulation.
The Pride took an early lead in the contest, building a five-point advantage at 18-13 off a trey from junior guard Stevie Mejia at the 11:42 mark.
But the Seahawks' offense woke up when back-to-back three-pointers by Smith and Morales gave UNCW the lead, 19-18, with 10:53 to play. The long bombs were part of a 9-0 Seahawk run which was capped by another Morales bucket at the 10:15 for a 22-18 advantage.
Later, the Seahawks used a 7-0 run to stretch their lead to as many as 10 when junior Matt Wilson put home two of his six points with 4:51 remaining in the first half to push UNCW's lead to 38-28.
Coach Buzz Peterson's team maintained its advantage for the rest of the stanza, carrying a 44-37 advantage into the break.
The Seahawks maintained their lead, never allowing the Pride to pull within eight until a short jumper from sophomore Stephen Nwaukoni cut the lead to six with only four seconds left on the clock.
UNCW continues conference play Thursday when it travels to Atlanta to take an upstart Georgia State program which has started the year 7-0 on its home court. Hofstra returns home to take on Northeastern on Wednesday.
