WILMINGTON, North Carolina - UNCW scored 46 points and shot 54.3 percent
from the floor in a strong first half and held on down the stretch to outlast
Campbell, 79-73, in collegiate women's basketball action Saturday afternoon in
Trask Coliseum.
The victory was the third straight for the Seahawks against the rival Lady
Camels, and boosts UNCW's record to 4-4 on the season. The loss drops Campbell
to 6-2.
The Seahawks had four players in double figures, led by sophomore Alisha Andrews with a game-high 18 points. Juniors Tawanna Lee and Jessica Freeman
posted 17 and 12, respectively, while junior Karneshia Garrett notched her
third double-double in four games with 11 markers and 13 boards. Junior Ayoola
Weaver added a game-high 14 rebounds.
The Lady Camels also received four double-digit scoring performances, with
junior Tonisha Baker and sophomore Ashley James both tallying 14 points. In
addition, freshman Kiera Gaines deposited 13 and senior Amanda O'Neill added 11
markers.
UNCW's balanced attack in the first stanza registered the most points (46) in a
single half since the Seahawks scored 50 in a half on Jan. 23 against Northeastern.
UNCW shot 19-of-35 from the floor for 54.3 percent and was 6-of-11 from beyond
the arc, good for 54.5 percent.
Campbell had the lead early, as a deep two from senior Amanda O'Neill gave the
Lady Camels a 13-10 lead with 14:15 remaining in the frame. But UNCW responded with a 15-1 run, capped by
a layup from Weaver, to boost the Seahawks to a 25-14 advantage at the 9:06
mark.
UNCW would stretch its lead to as many as 17 off a jumper from Andrews with
1:13 remaining in the stanza. The Seahawks had eight players score in the
frame, with Lee leading the way with 10 markers.
The Lady Camels' defense intensified in the second half, however, and held UNCW
to four points in the first six minutes. During the span, Campbell rattled off
a 14-2 run, finished by a free throw from sophomore Roslyn Presley at the 14:16
mark to cut the lead to 50-45.
But the Seahawks were able hold the lead on the strength of 24 second-half free
throws, allowing UNCW to maintain the advantage despite shooting just 4-of-22 from
the field in the second half. The Lady Camels pulled within four in the final
minute, but two free throws apiece from Lee, Andrews, and Weaver clinched the
win for the Seahawks.
UNCW travels to Charleston Southern Friday to face the Buccaneers in an 11:30 a.m.
matinee. The Seahawks do not return to Trask Coliseum until Dec. 29 when Xavier
visits the Port City. Campbell continues a four-game stint away from Buies
Creek Wednesday with a 7:00 p.m. contest at Elon.
GAME NOTES:

UNCW improved to 16-30 all-time against Campbell
as it picked up its third straight victory in the series. The Seahawks also
moved to 10-13 versus the Lady Camels at home.

The Seahawks surpassed the 70-point plateau for
the second time in as many games and improved to 2-0 this season and 15-1 under
Coach Cooper-Dyke when doing so.

UNCW posted season-highs in both free-throws made
(26) and attempted (38). The last time the Seahawks shot more than 35 free
throws in a game was against the Lady Camels last December (37).

Campbell posted a 42-22 advantage in points in
the paint, highlighted by a 30-4 edge in the second half. The Lady Camels also
posted a 23-10 margin in second-chance points, punctuated by a 15-5 advantage
over the final 20 minutes.

The Lady Camels' bench out-scored the Seahawks
reserves, 35-27, including a 20-9 margin in the second half.

The contest featured a total of just one lead
change. The score was never tied in the contest.

UNCW finished the contest 7-of-21 (.333) from
three-point range, schooting 6-of-11 from beyond the arc (.545) in the first
half, but just 1-of-10 (.100) in the second half.

UNCW was out-rebounded for the sixth time this
season as Campbell held a 50-40 edge on the glass.

UNCW shot above 40 percent from the floor for
the second straight game and the fourth time this season as it finished
23-of-57 (.404) from the field for the game. The Seahawks improved to 21-4 under
Cooper-Dyke when shooting above 40 percent from the floor.

The Seahawks posted double-figure assists for
the eighth straight contest and the 10th game dating back to the end of last
season as they finished with 15 assists.

UNCW posted double-figure steals for the seventh
time this season and the sixth straight contest as they posted 12 thefts.

The Seahawks held a lead at halftime for the
third time this season and improved to 20-4 under Cooper-Dyke when leading at
the half.

UNCW had four players score in double figures
for the second straight contest and improved to 14-3 under Cooper-Dyke when
doing so.
