CHARLOTTE, North Carolina - UNCW closed the game on a 14-2 run to erase an 11-point deficit and post a 74-73 victory over Charlotte in collegiate women's basketball action Wednesday at Halton Arena.
The Seahawks improved to 3-4 on the season as they halted a five-game losing skid to the 49ers, who dropped their fourth straight contest to move to 5-4 on the campaign.
Sophomore Alisha Andrews poured in a career-high 25 points, including 21 in the second half, and added seven assists and five steals to highlight a UNCW lineup that shot 44.1 percent from the floor, including 47.5 percent in the second half, and saw four players reach double figures.
Sophomore Gabby Tyler scored 15 points to lead four Charlotte players in double figures. Junior Amanda Dowe pulled down a game-high 14 rebounds to highlight a 49-35 advantage on the glass for the 49ers.
Down 71-60 with 3:36 remaining, a layup and back-to-back three pointers by Freeman ignited a 12-0 spurt that lasted just under three minutes and gave the Seahawks a 72-71 lead with only 20 seconds remaining.
Charlotte had a chance to tie the game on its next possession when sophomore Ny Hammonds was fouled and sent to the free-throw line for two shots with 13 ticks on the clock. Hammonds was unable to pull the 49ers even, however, as she missed both free throw attempts and McGowen was able to come up with the rebound off the second attempt for UNCW.
Charlotte was forced to foul Andrews on the Seahawks ensuing possession and the Stone Mountain, Ga., product calmly knocked down both free-throws to extend the Seahawks lead to 74-71.
The 49ers trimmed the Seahawks advantage to one on their next possession with a back-door layup by Dowe, but were once again forced to foul, this time sending junior Brittany Gamby to the stripe for the one-and-one with two seconds remaining. Gamby's first free-throw was short, but Charlotte was unable to get the ball past midcourt before time expired.
Earlier in the contest, a three-pointer from senior Epiphany Woodson sparked a 16-3 spurt that gave the 49ers a 22-15 lead with 8:50 remaining in the first half.
Charlotte would maintain its lead through the rest of the half, taking a 37-29 lead into the locker room before using a 7-2 spurt early in the second half to take its largest lead of the game, 53-39.
A 10-3 stretch would get the Seahawks within three, 59-56, but the 49ers responded with a 12-4 surge to pull ahead, 71-60, and set up UNCW's game-closing run.
The Seahawks returns to action Saturday when they host long-time rival Campbell in a 2 p.m. matinee at Trask Coliseum.
